We visited St. Augustine from CA 5 years ago and had the EXACT same conversation on Vilano Beach “How do we get here permanently?” We made a bold plan and moved 2800 miles, despite all our family and friends thinking were were crazy. We bought our home in Vilano 18 months ago and now we walk to Porpoise Point every day. We don’t like to rub it in, but we live in paradise now, it’s amazing! Hope to see y’all on the road sometime!

This is a bit of a strange and highly personal story about one of my moon rise experiences I thought I'd share. In mid-August of 2006 I found myself camping in the Cascade Mountains of Washington with my son and his wife on the occasion of his 31st birthday. We were camping at a tiny state park called Black Pine Lake State Park and yes, there is a lake, with a dock and boat ramp, but it's electric motors only (or no motor at all). It's a beautiful park, each camp site is like a little oasis in the forest, with huge areas of greens pace between each campsite, of which I believe there are only 25 or so tent-only campsites. There are no amenities other than running water from a couple of spigots scattered around the park and pit toilets in 2 locations. Winthrop, WA is probably the closest town and the drive up to the lake from Winthrop takes an hour, at least, as it's a mostly 1-lane dirt road (but well maintained). Our campsite was above and to one side of the dock and boat ramp, with the pit toilet across the road, about 30 yards away. This is where it gets a bit personal. Due to many circumstances in my life when I became pregnant with my son, I placed him for adoption at birth, in 1975, when I was 21 years old and totally incapable of caring for myself, let alone a child. With the help and suggestion of my OB-GYN, I was able to arrange a private adoption with a couple my doctor was treating for infertility. I was able to negotiate the terms of the adoption and the only thing I insisted on was being able to contact them once a year and that they were legally bound to respond to my letters. I wrote faithfully every year and they responded faithfully every year. In 1999, my son learned that he could contact me and so he did, via email. A relationship began to develop between us, not so much that of mother and son (although there was a bit of that), but more as related strangers getting to know each other, kinda like finding a close cousin you'd never met. As you may be able to imagine, the new relationship between my son and I was very fragile and it took years for him to gain any kind of trust in me. Which is why, on that August night in 2006, I had just met my son in person for the first time the day before, at Sea-Tac airport in Seattle, WA. We both knew we had a LOT of things to talk to each other about and we both agreed a 3 day camping road trip would give us an excellent way to spend hours upon hours with each other with tons of privacy. I knew the the territory, so I planned the trip. At Black Pine Lake, we had been talking about issues in regard to "nature versus nurture" and how it affects how children develop. It was getting late, we had a really wonderful campfire burning, we'd all been indulging in adult beverages. I had to excuse myself and trudge across the road to the bathroom and when I exited the shed that housed the toilet, and which was at higher elevation than our campsite, I gasped. A HUGE full moon was rising over the tops of the mountains around the lake and reflecting in the absolutely dead calm waters of the lake below. I hurried back down to our campfire and told my son and his wife, and we agreed we needed to go down to the dock, sit on the end of the dock, and continue our talk-a-thon from there. So we did. The three of us sat at the end of the dock, watched the full August moon rise over the lake and forest, while we talked about highly charged emotional issues, both struggling to help each other understand our feelings. Somehow the serenity of the scene before us, a low mist starting to rise across the lake, a very gentle breeze coming up to riffle the waters of the lake and the reflected full moon, got us both thru a talk that, while was painful, could have been much, much worse. It was about 3 am before we were talked out for the night (and maybe a little tipsy), but the three of us ended up sitting on the end of that dock, arms around each other, just breathing, knowing that the hardest part of this journey to coming to know each other, my son and I, was over. Catharsis...and the beginnings of a bond. Not that of mother and son (at least not on his side, I know that and fully accept it), but at least that of two people bound by blood. Things had been tense around the campfire and I had been worried that I was not handling my son's questions of me very well. Which is why, besides the biological need, I decided it was time to have a break. But when I saw that moon rising over the lake and mountains, I knew this was my one chance to shift the focus and take everything down a notch. And it worked. So yeah. watching a moon rise is an often under-rated experience, one I actually prefer to sunrise, hahaha.

Ticking all the boxes in this episode for my wife and I. We have spent many years camping on beaches of Race Point, Provincetown, MA. CCNS watching sunrises and sunsets. The moon rise always makes the moon appear to be much larger. So cool! And hot dogs cooked on a fire is one of my favorite meals. Memory lane from growing up. We also belong to an organization (MBBA) that volunteers to work with beach managers in MA. every year to pick up trash (truck loads) plant dune grass, install dune fencing or whatever is needed. Our way of giving back to the beaches we love and enjoy so much. Thanks for sharing!

Being former Maine residents, now full time FL residents. My wife and I have been to St. Augustine several times either w/ the camper or on a bus trip. Great city, never stayed at Anastasia, but looking at your RV sight reminds my wife of a visit to Tomoka State park near Ormond Beach. She said when stepping out of the camper, she felt like we were on the "Set" of Gilligans Island!! Being a former US Coast Guardsman and light house "Keeper"in Maine, I always make it a point to visit area Light houses when possible and St. Augustine Lighthouse is a favorite, pay the extra fee for a guided tour of the tower, that will get you into the room just below the Fresnel Lens to see the motor and gears that rotate the light!!

Spent 20+ years in Florida can never get enough of it. There's nothing better than watching the sunrise on the beach with claws from Publix, and coffee. Unless of course it's watching the moon rise with a controlled fire on the beach, and hot pizza (sorry your pizza wasn't on the beach with a fire). I can ship you a few raccoons if you'd like. We have 2 juvenile raccoons coming every night to our front porch destroying my garden pots, and tossing the furniture. They've succeeded on ripping the plants out of the pots, and spreading the soil acrossed the porch. It's a game for them. Relaxation, and taken a break is a good thing for y'all.

We get pizza there everytime we’re in St Augustine! And we’re from Ocala, so we love Harry’s! Didn’t know there was one in St Augustine though lol

1.5 years ago, we took a 4 month Epic Adventure from our home in Olympia, WA, to Portland, ME, south to FL, across the SW, and home again. While in VA Beach, we took your advice and walked on the beach while the sun set, walked back while the moon rose, then got up the next morning for sunrise. It was magical. (I am gluten & dairy allergic, so didn't get the donuts. But we really appreciated your recommend for Holy Donuts in Portland, ME...definitely worth the trip back to ME just for those! 😁) We thoroughly enjoy your videos each week, and appreciate all the great ideas & locations you share. Stay safe out there 🤗
