During the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920's, tenants hired musicians or bands to play and raise money to pay their rent. This social occasion originating in Harlem, and played a major role in the development of jazz and blues. The likes of Duke Ellington, Fats Waller and Cab Calloway would show up to jam at these parties.
