One of the worst mistakes I made was trying to play the 6 sting banjo like a guitar. I now play my chords and the top of the fret board also using bone, and horn picks for Celtic music and wooden ebony pick for a more mountain modal sound. Double stops and bending the strings can create a hillbilly picking that can sound the part.I have also have tried tuned it to open g and d great for bottleneck slide who needs a resonator. DADGAD can also be fun. If your wife complains you can get a mute from goldtone that fits on your bridge it's called a happy wife. Worth the money . Have fun.🤩👍

Yes, I tried that for a while too. You're right, it doesn't sound like a banjo when played that way. Thanks for the tips!

This instrument goes back to the 1920s and 30s before we had amplification, Johnny St Cyr played one of these.

I have a Barnes and Mullins 6 string banjo I put a compensated grover bridge on mine and strung it up with Derring strings which made it sound better also lowered the action using the truss rod coordinator. I has taken me a while to get a good sound out of it tried all sorts of tunings Capoing it helps also. Look forward to hearing some of your stuff over the next while.🤩👍

Any update on this instrument? I live in the Netherlands and was thinking of getting this from Thomann. Are you happy with it? Thanks!

What kind of strings are used on this

It uses those loop-end strings like most banjos. The gauges were too heavy imo, so I put a set of .009s on it. But you can't use standard ball-end electric guitar strings.😒
