Harmonics have a highly unique sound. They are created when a finger is placed lightly on the string instead of pressing the string down against the fingerboard, as is normally done. This allows the entire length of the string to vibrate, and it can sound haunting and beautiful at the same time.
The piece I am playing here comes from a solo cello composition by a friend named Jacob Mashak. He likes to write music that is very slow and meditative. One of his pieces lasts several days, and the sequence of notes never repeats in exactly the same way!
I think his music is inspiring, and it helps me relax and focus.
