This song also became a picturebook (kzitem.info/news/bejne/y4SDqGelpGhjg2k) and it was co-written with his friend Koos Meinders (an author of children's books) Harrie Jekkers started as a musician in the popgroup 'Klein Orkest' in the eighties (after a modest and unsatisfying career as an English teacher). When the band disbanded he started as a comedian. He also wrote children's books and plays and made albums with songs for children. He is now semi-retired though he had a succesful reunion tour with the band last few years. My fave of 'Klein Orkest' is 'Over de muur' (about the cold war and the Berlin Wall. Of his songs for children, you could try 'De Kerstezel' (concerning a sweet and innocent love around the annual school nativity play), 'Mijn vader is een leugenaar' and the beautiful poem/song 'De ballade van de dood'.

'Cabaretier' is translated as 'comedian', but if you translate that back to Dutch, its 'komediant', which is not the same thing as cabaretier. A comedian: just tells jokes (as in 'stand up comedian'). But a cabaretier, does so much more. He does not only make you laugh, he also (sometimes) makes you cry, and or gives commentary on society (even politics is not shunned by some). He performs art. He (perhaps) dances, juggles, does magic, sings songs, imitations. Some perform solo, some have a 'aangever' (joke-set-upper, André van Duin most often uses such a person), or a partner. Some only sing songs. Some only have funny monologues. Every cabaretier has his/her own unique style. They are allround entertainers. I think its an unique aspect of Dutch culture. Some countries have performers that come close though: think Monty Python, Benny Hill, 'Bottom', 'the young ones', etc.

Harrie Jekkers is my favorite comedian. Despite his shows being very old, he tells stories in a super funny and romantic way at the same time. He can also write fantastic songs, this is a good example of that. A recommendation is 'Ik hou van mij'.

There is a difference between (stand-up) comedy and cabaret. The laugh is the goal of comedy, the goal of cabaret is the message often with good a good joke.

It's beautiful and we see too little of this. We have these talented people that make both jokes and sing songs and tell stories in the same show and you are laughing and it's very silly, one moment and you're almost in tears so moved the next. We have academies that educate them too. I don't really see that in the U.S where people want to be famous actors or singers and end up playing and singing other people's material, not just one person on stage. The exception is John Leguizamo I think he did it in a few stage shows, telling stories about his life and playing characters that were both funny and moving. He's an amazing guy, Manny the Fanny is a great example.

This is so beautiful.. To me it is a metaphor for somebody going through an internal awakening process, learning to take their head out of the clouds and open their heart to the immediate world around them and the beauty of it ❤ As some spiritual teachers would call it, becoming present to or in the here and now. Not needing to escape life, nor fearing or imagining its escape in some ways or others, but embracing what is right in front.. And enjoying all of it

Today I came across this song. It was in my fb memories. But this time it got me in tears. People don't realize they are already surrounded by beauty, by everything worthwhile, but they can't see it anymore, blind by searching, when it's already there. Reminds me of something michael wrote in his book dancing the dream: Michael Jackson "The fish that was thirsty (reflection)" lyrics One night a baby fish was sleeping under some coral when God appeared to him in a dream. "I want you to go forth with a message to all the fish in the sea," God said. "What should I tell them?" the little fish asked. "Just tell them you're thirsty," God replied. "And see what they do." Then without another word, He disappeared. The next morning the little fish woke up and remembered his dream. "What a strange thing God wants me to do," he thought to himself. But as soon as he saw a large tuna swimming by, the little fish piped up, "Excuse me, but I'm thirsty." "Then you must be a fool," then tuna said. And with a disdainful flick of his tail, he swam away. The little fish did feel rather foolish, but he had his orders. The next fish he saw was a grinning shark. Keeping a safe distance, the little fish called out, "Excuse me, sir, but I'm thirsty." "Then you must be crazy," the shark replied. Noticing a rather hungry look in the shark's eye, the little fish swam away quickly. All day he met cod and mackerels and swordfish and groupers, but every time he made his short speech, they turned their backs and would have nothing to do with him. Feeling hopelessly confused, the little fish sought out the wisest creature in the sea, who happened to be an old blue whale with three harpoon scars on his side. "Excuse me, but I'm thirsty!" the little fish shouted, wondering if the old whale could even see him, he was such a tiny speck. But the wise one stopped in his tracks. "You've seen God, haven't you?" he said. "How did you know?" "Because I was thirsty once, too." The old whale laughed. The little fish looked very surprised. "Please tell me what this message from God means," he implored. "It means that we are looking for Him in the wrong places," the old whale explained. "We look high and low for God, but somehow He's not there. So we blame Him and tell ourselves that He must have forgotten us. Or else we decide that He left a long time ago, if He was ever around." "How strange," the little fish said, "to miss what is everywhere." "Very strange," the old whale agreed. "Doesn't it remind you of fish who say they're thirsty?"

Harry Jekkers is one of my all-time favorite entertainers by a country mile (or two!) He has a great and soothing voice when he sings, and his songs have some of the best (nostalgic at times) lyrics you can find. But his comedy... he's a story teller comedian, for me that is the best kind of comedian because they take you on a journey during the show. And Harry is no stranger to taking you on a lengthy journey in which he has you in stitches and tears from one moment to the other, he's .. well he's unique because there is nobody i know of, who does music and theater like he does, an absolute genuine man with the best stories and songs, it's kind of that simple hehehe. You really need to check out some of his comedy shows, stuff like "het gelijk van de koffie tent" (the truth of a coffeeshop) and "met een goudvis naar zee" (heading to the sea with a goldfish) would be great shows for you to discover. And he has a special show with his best friend Koos Meinderts (who wrote this story btw, the man in the clouds is a book by Koos Meinderts) called "Het verhaal achter de liedjes" (the story behind the songs) and in that many a song comes by, we get teh story behind it and ofc a lot of personal anecdotes and stories that lead to writing some of these songs. I highly recommend that show to anyone who likes Harry and wants to know a little more about the songs backgrounds. PS. he used to be an English teacher too.
