Harris proved that she knows exactly how to debate a narcissist on the highest degree of the spectrum. You don’t give those narcissist details that they can measure into a word salad. I think she found the perfect balance of her plans without details. That was a strategic move on her part, and I think it will pay off. Although the spectrum of the narcissist’s victim affects women mostly, it affects men as well. And those of us that have had to deal with narcissists, which is well over 50% of women, know exactly what she did because we do it every day, dealing with these exes that feel so entitled. Harris did very well, which gives me even more admiration than I had, regarding her ability to deal with these dictator men.

The thesis of this crew that a debate is an opportunity for substantive policy discussion is remarkably dim witted and naive. Thank god she doiesn't take notes from this slightky DK crew. The point is to get a sense of the candidates as political animals and create a sense of trust. It is always at most headlines. Trump leaves no room for substance since whenever he doesn't know any substance he just pivots to one of his three standard topics he has worked up. How do you maintain a dialectic with a choleric. Victor Orban as a character reference is Trump knowing most people won't have any idea that it is like Nixon using Pinochet as his character reference.

It's especially mind-boggling considering how increasingly out of touch Trump has become. Concepts of a plan? They're eating, they're eating? Bypassing the question on immigration to talk about his rallies? Illegal operations on transgender aliens? What? Trump in 2016 did NOT make these mistakes. Trump in 2020 RARELY made them. He's lost it. He's out of touch. That this is not the story can only be explained - in my mind - by the media itself having been out of touch for the last decade. They've been covering this guy that long. How do they not see it?

I understand the qualms about whether Harris's priority ought to be trying to define herself or define Trump. But I seriously question whether the missing piece is policy details. I mean, I get it, blue America generally believes in policy details, and serious journalists believe in policy details fervently. How policy details fit into contemporary campaigns, where discussion occurs in red and blue bubbles, that is in doubt. What I have no doubt about, however, is the nature of the undecided vote in the Harris-Trump contest. It would be nigh impossible to convince me that we have thousands or even dozens of people in those battleground states who are both a) truly undecided, and b) paying attention to the details. These are people who are, for some reason or other, disengaged or alienated. I'm not even sure they care whether a stolen pet was actually stolen in a particular city or by an actual immigrant -- citizens under siege may well be the limit of their engagement, and they approve that one of the candidates seems to care. But say, on housing, the further into policy details the candidate goes, the more the candidate is speaking another language. (I am a retired high school teacher, so I know something about the limits of attention span among the less engaged.)

I'm annoyed that Harris flubbed what should have been a pretty easy answer to the third-trimester abortion question. People who have an abortion because they don't want kids (or more kids) don't wait __six months__ to do so. Late-term abortions are rare* and generally occur during wanted pregnancies. That is, the person needs an abortion because of life-threatening medical complications, or because the foetus has serious congenital defects incompatible with life. Imagine finding out your, again, __wanted__ baby has anencephaly and cannot live more than a few days outside the womb. Then imagine being forced to give birth to it anyway because the government thinks they know better. The former is a sad fact of life, the latter is senseless cruelty. I wrote that off the top of my head, and I'm not an abortion rights campaigner. *CDC data says about 1% of abortions in the US take place after 24 weeks. Other countries like the UK have similar statistics.
