For some time I've had an idea to increase the size of the motor on the Harrison 140 lathe. My lathe is an ex-school machine so has the low power 1.5HP unit paired with the small drive pulley which delivers a top speed of 750RPM.
I found a suitable candidate in our stores which was taken from a scrap Kingsland metalworker. It's a Brooks Crompton 2.2kw unit, 3 phase of course.
I also rescued a Mitsubishi inverter from a scrap pile, on testing it is working fine. It's a 7.5hp unit so more than big enough for this application. This will give the ability to overspeed the motor if needed and provide a jog function which is useful for power tapping.
I will fit this once the motor is fitted and known to be working well under load.
One of our customers is a rewinder. Should the motor give any trouble it will be rewound with Class H insulation.
