Harry Dearth sings 'Joe the Gipsy,' with piano probably by Madame Adami, recorded on 11 March 1914.
Harry Dearth - that was his full name - was born in Chelsea, London, in 1876 and was educated at the Royal College of Music. He first appeared on the concert platform in 1894 and made his debut in opera (in English) in 'Don Giovanni' at the Lyceum Theatre, London, in 1897. Thereafter, he frequently appeared as a soloist with the Royal Philharmonic Society and Royal Choral Society. He also appeared at His Majesty's Theatre and Covent Garden during the Beecham English Opera seasons.
Dearth successfully toured Australia and New Zealand in 1919, and his son (also known as Harry Dearth) settled here.
Dearth died on 18 April 1933 as the result of pleurisy. He is buried in the Kensington and Chelsea Cemetery, London.
