This song was released in mid 1945 with Kitty Kallen as the vocalist (That version is the one in Endgame). The war in Europe is over, the war in the Pacific is close to finishing. There are 11 MILLION service members getting ready to come home. The wives and girlfriends are anxious to see them again after, in some cases, being gone for a couple years or more. The men in the Army, Navy, Marines and Army Air Corps are anxious to see their "girl back home". Any wonder this hits #1 on Billboard? Both this version and the Bing Crosby version hit #1 sequentially. Women hear this song from a female vocalist and think of their men coming home. Men hear the Bing version with a male vocalist and think of their wife or girlfriend left behind. Lot's of meaning for everyone at that time for this song. Which is what makes it so appropriate for Steve Rodgers in the movie.

My wife Carol said that this was one of her favorite songs during the time I was gone in Vietnam. For sure we kissed more than once or twice. You can't describe the feeling when you walk off that plane and the one you live for is standing (jumping up and down) there waiting for you. Been heaven every day since.

I believe that this is a re-recording of an earlier version done by Harry James with Kitty Kallen. The original has a vocal intro before the verse starts that goes, "Never thought that you would be standing here so close to me. There's so much I feel that I should say. But words can wait until some other day." Still, a nice version of a great song.
@Lengo67

Yes, is great song. This recording with Helen Forrest is much cleaner and approaches Hi-Fi, but it isn't stereo. Stereo wasn't invented until 1954, and wasn't widely accepted until 1957, so this must have been prior to or in '54. I know that Harry James kept up his big band until the late seventies (I know this because I saw him play at Disneyland in '69 and it was a WOW moment for me). I can't find any details on when this version was recorded and released, but I sure would like to know. So far, all searching has resulted in a big fat zero. I do know this, however: Helen Forrest had more hits and sang for many more years than Kitty Kalen, and some are stereo. Forrest sang for Artie Shaw, then Benny Goodman, then Harry James, then went on to a solo career until '79, when Forrest performed in supper clubs on "big band nostalgia" tours, including appearances with Harry James and Dick Haymes. In 1977, Helen participated in a television reunion of herself, James, and Haymes on The Merv Griffin Show.. Kitty Kalen, on the other hand, ended up her career with the television show 'What's my Line?' where she was a panelist. I sure would like to find out what year this was recorded! It's super clean compared to Harry James' with Kitty Kalen. It's more laid back too. The only down side is that it isn't stereo, but hey! That's not that big of a deal compared to the pluses in this. It's, as they say, "swell".
@JamesBjorkman

I know you're going to think I'm being argumentative here, but I'm not. SImply trying to give proper credit where it is due. Stereo was around a long, long time before 1954. In fact, Alan Dower Blumlein was awarded a Grammy in 2017 for inventing stereo and using it in films as early as 1935. Walt Disney's "Fantasia" (1940), which one could argue invented the music video, was in stereo. There was nothing technically difficult about recording in stereo then, it was just more expensive. The development you are referring to in the mid-1950s was when major record companies refined the stereo sound on magnetic tape and began recording orchestras with it. That made it cheaper and more accessible. You may say "Well, that's the same thing" - but it's not. Stereo was around and very well known in the 1940s. Saying stereo was invented in the 1950s is like saying that home movies only became invented with the cd disc - completely omitting the entire VHS era.

My Dad came back from D Day and was so happy to be back home from the war. I asked my Dad did you see Paris, he said yes but I didn't leave anything back in Paris, he wanted to get back home to see my Mom who was a gorgeous model and his family in San Francisco. This was the theme song for the era of the 1940's when GI's who survived the war were thankful to be alive and and everyone knew this song. Whenever my Dad would see someone of his age, he would say where were you in the war and they would have a brotherhood and a connection that us civilians will never know. I have photos of my Dad and my grandfather with my father back on leave and they were tight because my grandfather served in WWI and everyone in his unit was KIA except for him and one other soldier. It was the battle of Vimy Ridge where there were over 6000 casualties in two days of fighting. They both knew the horrors of war and my aunt and uncles as well as my grandparents were afraid he wouldn't come back. He made it back but it took one year of playing cards with his buddies and drinking beer to get back into society from what they called shell shock. I don't think my father ever recovered from what he saw and experienced in WWII.
