@Blue Mustard Didn’t happen in the movies. But it did happen in the canon. Mcgonagall has feats that Snape can’t even compare to in the book. Dueling Voldemort with just two other wizards to a stalemate. Creating protective enchantments that no one except Voldemort could break. Transfiguring all kinds of objects into defensive weapons during the attack, making up for the lack of numbers in the good guys’ armies. Dueling 5-7 death eaters at a time and defeating them soundly. Even her fight with Snape was different in the book. She was soundly catching him on the backfoot over and over again. Snape was not much of a duelist. There is no indication that he was any sort of match for someone as impressive on the dueling front as Mcgonagall. Snape’s strength was in knowledge of dark arts and thus his preparedness against them.

What kills me in this scene, is the look of utter heartbreak on Snape's face as he deflects each attack. He loved a woman who never loved him the same, yet he went out of his way to protect her and her family. He lost her, and still he protected her son. Not only that, but had Lily chosen him, Harry could have very well been their son. He then has to create this persona that leaves him being despised by the very people he constantly risks his life to protect, all the while working alongside the man who murdered the woman he loves, and in the end had to kill one of his closest friends, and take the blame, almost resulting in Macgonigall (excuse my spelling) killing him. He even wipes out the two death eaters and takes their wands away. I've just sat through the whole series for the very first time, (my girlfriend is a harry potter fanatic) and Snape is one of the best character arcs in fiction.

To me, this scene is proof of just how outrageously dangerous and selfish a gamble Albus Dumbledore made at the end of Year 6 with both his and Snape's reputations. Snape certainly had a point by telling Dumbledore he took too much for granted - he literally made fools out of McGonagall and the entire Hogwarts, not to mention the students, the faculty, as well as the entire Order of the Phoenix, putting hundreds of lives on the line because of Dumbledore's dishonesty. The mere fact that Minerva could have killed Severus in that duel is almost concrete proof that Dumbledore had no guarantee whatsoever that events would turn out the way he wanted them to, and to me, that is the single biggest tragedy of the whole series. It's practically a miracle of divine proportions that Snape was vindicated at all.

Snape was so misunderstood, it hurts. You can see he's deeply hurt when McGonagall goes for him, specially when she smirks after attacking him the first time. Her smirk said "I've always wanted to do that" while his face screams "I can't believe I'm hated by someone I respect". Minerva looked satisfied whilst Snaped looked extremely sad by the whole affair. You really feel bad for him, specially after finding out about everything. I hope after Minerva found out the truth that she started to judge people less by their cover, and maybe even appreciate it a bit that he didn't want to harm her. It wasn't cowardice like she originally thought, but Snape's respect for her that kept him from fighting back
@wyatt9144

While I don't appreciate you misinterpreting McGonagall's completely justified belief that Snape is a death eater and thus is a bad guy, I am here to inform you about what happened after the duel and the Battle of Hogwarts. After, Minerva is appointed Headmistress, and once she realized what Snape had done, how he had performed in the circumstances, and what he'd done to protect everyone, she hung a portrait of him proudly with all of the past headmasters. This shows that she realized what he had done, and forgave him for everyone. McGonagall wasn't judging Snape by his cover, she was basing her judgment off of what she had known about Snape, which was not that he was a double agent for Dumbledore.

Lol Snape was a dick for 6 of the 7 books and is only truly helpful in the last one. He treats everyone like crap. Yes, in the last one he is obviously very misunderstood since he is actively pretending to be evil in front of everyone and he does deserve that recognition but he's a twit for the entire rest of the series. A sad disgusting bitter man.

I will never get over just how HEROIC Snape was in this series. The level of sheer willpower one must possess to raise their hand against their friends, colleagues, and students - make it look convincing without doing any serious damage - to maintain a façade that MUST be maintained to trick an incredibly deadly and socially pervasive opponent is just... it's mind blowing. And in this particular scene: he neutralized the Carrows during his 'duel', while remaining undercover. Brilliant!

The one flaw I always found with the Harry Potter story is that immediately after this scene, ALL of the Slytherin students were marched to the dungeons. It would have been better if some of them had fought alongside their peers to defend the school against the Deatheaters. That would have demonstrated that being a Slytherin wasn't an automatic mark of evil. Snape showed that, of course, but everyone else just assumed that all the Slytherin kids were bad seeds and pre-judged them. It was a bit one dimensional, and at this point in the story, things had evolved to the point where we were beyond such moral absolutes and into more shades of grey. So it just felt a bit jarring. The characters had gone through so much growth and development over seven books, but after all that moral uncertainty and the maturity that comes with it, that single act felt more like it belonged in Book One, not Book Seven.

The Harry Potter movies (not the books) only gives credit to Gryffindors. They're the ultimate heroes, the golden trio are all Gryffindors, Neville who kills Nagini is also a Gryffindor, all the weasleys are Gryffindor. I mean, anyone doing anything significant heroic in the movies is a Gryffindor. Where were Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff in the final battle? Hell, where was Slytherin? In the books Slughorn fought with some Slytherins against Voldemorts lackeys. In the movie he is shown as a coward who couldn't find his wand. I mean Srsly. I hate the one sidedness of the HP movies, it almost resembles the blandness of the LOTR movies.

The fact that snape never attempted to strike back in this fight and deflected her blows to knock out the other death eaters and the fact that as snape flies out you can see he flies to each death eater taking their wand so they cannot harm any more students before leaving is a nice touch. Snape really had the hardest mission out of any Harry Potter character. He had to be a double agent that killed his headmaster and took the scrutiny of his peers, friends, and students so that in the end they would have a chance to defeat Voldemort.

Snape is the best!!! Whenever he looks at Harry, there's always something deep said through his eyes. Here, there's so much sadness in his eyes, about his disguised duel role, taking all the blame, his repressed feelings and inner struggles.. AND he still does his job killing two death eaters without letting anyone know about his true intention no matter what.

Alan Rickman and Dame Maggie Smith really make this a really powerful scene, without a word needing to be spoken. Her hatred for Snape, and her protectiveness of Harry are so clear . His despair at the situation and pain at having to fight. All without talking. A master class in acting.

Ok, a few things: 1. The way McGonagall is stepping in to protect Harry. So. Awesome. 2. Alan Rickman again is the most talented actor in the whole damn franchise if not the most talented actor in the world. His acting is very unique. He may not be an allrounder but the things he does, he does them so well, who cares if he is not in every romantic comedy or action movie. 3. I love how Snape took out the Carrows before he flew away. When you watch the movie or read the book for the first time, it's like "DAMN IT SNAPE WHY DID YOU BETRAY US!!!!!" but when you rewatch it with his knowledge of the biography of his character it is like "DAMN IT SNAPE YOU'RE A FUCKING GENIUS AND THE BRAVEST AND MANLIEST MAN!!!!!" I feel like Harry Potter truly has shaped a generation. I am so happy to have been able to discover and enjoy it as a kid and it is still my favorite thing from childhood to watch. Harry Potter is life!

I love this scene so much. You can tell from Snape's expression at 2:29 that he did not want to fight McGonagall. At 2:44 he deflects her attack and sends it backward to take out the Carrow twins, both of whom have their wands drawn. Then at 2:47, he takes the Carrow twin's wands before fleeing.

I never noticed that little jump between the two bodies before, good catch! Although it might just be an interpretation that he's taking their wands, it's still a good theory! I like it :)

@@clement5420 Definitely interpretation. But I still, after all these years, think of why he jumped to their bodies like that before leaving. Unless, of course, he was checking to see if they were dead or alive.

@@dylancastellanos87 in a later scene you can see that the left one still has the wand in hand. about his deflection. to me it looks like he purposefully attacks the Carrows. You know the standard greyish attack most people summon with just a flick of the wrist? they both get hit with one of those while the attacks of Mcgonogal are pure flame. To me it looks like he disguises his double attack with a block of Mcgonogals attack. I mean both interpretations are really cool and difficult to pull of. Snape hits the right one blocks the attack and hits the left one all in one motion. Disguising it as collateral. I just love the scene.

Am I the only one who got the feeling Snape escaped just because he did not want to hurt Professor McGonagall in this duel? The plan he had with Prof. Dumbledore involved him killing Dumbledore, but hurting McGonagall was never part of the plan and that's why he wanted to avoid it. Edit: Holy shit, guys, thanks for the likes!

Nytt På Nytt Oh really? Mcgonagall? She is able to produce three patronuses without a word, while battling four death eaters at the same time. She not being able to defeat snape would be like saying that a bulldozer couldn't squash a bug. Not to mention, she also dueled voldemort alongside flitwick and slughorn. Next to dumbledore, voldemort, and grindewald, she is the next most powerful witch. now that all of them are dead, does that make her the most powerful witch of the age?

Nytt På Nytt But, snape is also very powerful. Can't deny that. He's also very brave.
