Yeah Harry cowrote it and he said in an interview that he wrote it in the point of view of a woman who just gave birth but she has 5 minutes to live. This is his statement from the interview: “Most of the stuff that hurts me about what’s going on at the moment is not politics, it’s fundamentals … Equal rights. For everyone, all races, sexes, everything. … ’Sign of the Times’ came from ‘This isn’t the first time we’ve been in a hard time, and it’s not going to be the last time.’ The song is written from a point of view as if a mother was giving birth to a child and there’s a complication. The mother is told, ‘The child is fine, but you’re not going to make it.’ The mother has five minutes to tell the child, ‘Go forth and conquer.'”

JustTheVoice Not sure if anyone has actually told you what type of genre that this song falls under... This is what us 80's & 90's rockers call A Rock Ballad. What defines a 'rock ballad'... Usually a rock ballad is a rock composition which can often be lengthy, but has emotional subject matter at it's core. They are often love songs, but can often refer to any song which revolves around emotional topic.

He wrote it! It's supposed to give an analogy of a mother giving birth to a child and then dying. She's telling the child that the hardships that we're facing today have been face in the past and we're repeating it "We never learn, we've been here before" She's telling the child to continue to strive for equality and such, in the duration of the song...I'm not that great at explaining it but the meaning is so beautiful...means a lot to me..

If you go back and watch some of One Direction older performances (preferably 2012 when they were on tour), Harry hit high notes quite often. Sometimes he would sing random high notes while they were joking around on stage (chest voice and falsetto). He and Zayn were the ones to always show the most range, but his voice has definitely gotten deeper, raspier, etc., so his upper register doesn't come to him with as much ease as before.

JustTheVoice - Love your channel. Love your reactions! And, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE YOUR VOICE!😘 One more thing... Not sure if you have viewed Harry on the Today Show performing Sign Of The Times ... In my opinion, I think he hits the high notes! I could be wrong, but I think he nailed it!😎 The best video I've found of it was on Levis Rough Play's channel.

I don't think it was a matter of working out the high notes, he's hit high notes in 1D with hardly any effort. I think it was a matter of working out the nerves being by himself. He did it though, in record time. Just had to get that first time out of the way first. ❤️❤️. He wrote this song with his guitarist, Mitch.

Harry Styles has never been nervous on SNL, that stuff is second nature to him. It’s a matter of the little boy has grown up to be a man and so has his voice. And there were four other people that helped write the song other than Harry and Mitch.
