I’ve always seen Haruko’s character as a sort of stand in for the relationship between Naota and Mamimi. Naota sees himself as older and more mature, and in trying to assert that maturity he ends up fooling around with a girl way older than him. In the end Mamimi is essentially grooming Naota into being the replacement for his brother and taking advantage of his naive immaturity to reach that goal. That’s all some very complex stuff that I’m sure neither Mamimi nor Naota are even mature enough to fully comprehend. So, here comes Haruko, taking advantage of Naota in a more literal way by using him for his N.O. That’s something easier to grasp and understand. Mamimi is older and more mature (even if it’s just by a little) and so she starts seeing the problem with their relationship before Naota and ends up leaving, realizing the horrible thing she’s done. Naota, on the other hand, is still naive and stubborn leading Haruko to have to be the one to tell him he’s too young before she leaves. I’ve always had an issue with people calling FLCL a coming of age story. Yeah it technically is one, but it’s not about growing up necessarily, more a cautionary tale against trying to grow up too fast. Haruko’s canonical intentions don’t matter nearly as much as her narrative purpose. You can argue all day about whether she’s a villain or not, but from a narrative perspective her goal is very clear as a representation of the grooming done by Mamimi

Haruko did help Naota to grow by getting him away from Mamimi and ultimately maturing but she always intended to just use him. At the end of the day, regardless of who she helped she still screwed herself because of her own selfishness. I know she isn't evil but she still isn't a good person by any means. She might either chase power forever or get it eventually but she wont have total freedom cuz the guilt may haunt her forever.

1:14 Haruko didn't mistake Canti for an enemy, she was trying to force Atomsk out of him but seemingly doesn't understand how N.O. works very well (that's why she acts confused and asks where he is afterwards)
@KoPilotKoko
5 жыл бұрын
She doesn't know Canti can do that though, and later tells her superiors "i recruited one of the enemy robots." So it's true that canti was technically an enemy unit at the time. BUT Haruko didnt know that Canti being Red signified that Atomsk was in control. So she hits him to stop the conflict, then wonders where Atomsk is. But she isn't wondering why he didnt come out of Canti, she's wondering why he didn't come out of Naota.
@evangeliondrugs4856
5 жыл бұрын
By that metric how would she have known that he'd come out of Naota? She's done this before with at least one other person (Amarao), I feel like she'd know better than to expect to just get to Atomsk on her first go (especially considering how Naota was sort of unproven at that point)
@evangeliondrugs4856

Also having a character arc doesn't make her "not the villain". Antagonists aren't static characters by definition, they're open to development if the story allows/demands it.

@@evangeliondrugs4856 the thumbnail does not reflect the argument in the video, sorry about that. I just know people tend to miss that haruko actually changes by the end of the story. Also, she was clearly expecting atomsk to come out of naota, because once the battle in episode 1 is over, she looks around and says "where is he?" I don't know what made her expect this, but there's no other "he" she would be looking for at that time.
@KoPilotKoko

@@evangeliondrugs4856 also she would have no way of knowing atomsk could channel himself into a robot or that it was indeed happening at that moment. Because she hits canti from behind, and never sees the atomsk symbol on his screen

If I could compare Haruko to any character, it would probably be Rick Sanchez from Rick and Morty. Both are selfish, eccentric and dangerously insane space travelers who drag awkward & emotionally troubled children on their bizarre adventures with little regard for their wellbeing or the safety of literally everyone around them in pursuit of selfish goals, yet deep down inside, they're truly capable of caring for others. (coughs in promoting my Gravity Falls/FLCL crossover fanfictions where I confirm Rick played an important part in Haruko's backstory)

Excellent, excellent video. This show always gets blown wide open every few years with a new perspective on it. Thank you for that. This might be one of the most meaningful interpretations of the show I've seen. Haruko was my favorite character, but I never could quite formulate why she was so awesome and it came down to her internal ethics that you can instinctual detect in her behavior.

Wait, THAT'S the plot of FLCL???? Huh. You know in hindsight, that makes all the sense. I have seen this show a few times, and just kinda rolled with whatever was on screen. The Airsoft battle is awesome. Blues Drive Monster from the sound track is still one of my favorite pieces and I can still hear it in my head to this day. But I never connected that Naota being sexually frustrated was what allowed the portals to open. Or that his state of mind could affect what came through. But seeing it explain here? Yeah. Yeah that tracks. Awesome!

And this is why Progressive is ass and why Alternative is fantastic. In Progressive, Haruko and Jinyu are this bizarre "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern" duo who are constantly breaking the fourth wall, aware that the idea of finding Atomsk (aka, making a sequel) is futile. It doesn't add any kind of depth to her character or tell a new story, it's just her taking six episodes to realize the plot is dumb. It doesn't help that the characters kind of just reinforce the same message and add nothing However, in Alternative, you see a glimpse of Haruko working for the Space Patrol Brotherhood in a much more noble pursuit to help Kana (and subsequently the world). This is a side of Haruko we haven't seen, a far more maternal take on the character and one viewed through the eyes of a slightly more mature character. Her advice seems to be from someone who's constantly made mistakes and doesn't live nearly as recklessly anymore. I love the rap she busts out for Kana, in all it's cheesy glory, almost like she's one of those lame videos you'd watch in school about learning social skills. It's good shit. Sure, she's still lewd and uses her skills in questionable ways, but it's for a greater good. I love the back and forth between her and Kanda, who's clearly seen her in action before. He seems to be one of the few adults she actually respects to some degree and their mutual friendship is a good subversion of the antagonistic relationship between her and Amarao. Ironically, it's a better progression.

The satalite bomb was not to destroy the plant, the plant is indestructible. Haruko mentions that this spot wuld have the least amount of damage even though the bomb is heading right for it. The bomb was most likely her way of abandoning the mission.

I mean, define villain. If I told you there was a woman who came to town, to manipulate a kids emotions for no other reason than to get everything she wants with no regard for said kids emotions... I'm not really calling that "neutral". And, lets not forget the moment he got the powers of Atamosk, she became blood thirsty and tried to kill him. So, if you want to say not "the villain" sure...but she is "a villain" and there is no real way about that.
@MrEriklenn

Having watched FLCL again Haruko doesn't do anything overtly villainous. Yes, she's manipulative and selfish and uses Naota to her own ends but if Haruko was a true villain she would threaten to kill Naota's family to get what she wants and she doesn't. Haruko walks the very fine line between a hero and a villain. She's an antihero; someone that doesn't have the typical traits to be a true hero nor a true villain. In the final episode of Alternative doesn't she say that she isn't one for bad endings? A true villain would want a bad ending wouldn't they? Haruko is neither hero or villain. She's in a morally grey area for sure but she isn't evil

According to villain wiki she is EVIL and the main villain of the FLCL series. But I would argue that Medical Mechanica is the real evil organization and the Intergalactic space immigration people are the bad guys of the series as they cause the robots that murder people. Haruko stirs the pot and would be more of an anti-heroine to me. She does good in stopping the robots and teaching the kids as an older female mentor if zany and batshit insane.
@damndani3l530

I wouldn't say the villain but for most of the series she feels like a selfish and horrible person at times since shes willing to manipulate people at a whim. She still has feelings and somewhat redeems herself. Still it can be understandable when some come to that conclusion.
