1975 and 1976 all but bankrupted me , I grew less than a tonne of wheat and had no grass for the cattle or to make hay . It was a nightmare , I had to sell all the cattle . The only good thing was , I had a wonderful bank manager , and machinery dealer , and they kept me going until 1977 which was a great year . I was also getting married and rebuilding the farmhouse . Ah , happy days .🤔🤔😊😊😊😊

In 1976 we got 8 ton from a 45 acre field of spring barley. We tied baler twine to the reel tines to try get the ears close to the ground. A lot of farmers stopped growing spring crops after 76. Age 11 then.

Well done to Graham for cutting 50 harvests, (incidentally my father is now on 65!) On the subject of oil seed rape, black grass only became a problem when the crops became thin due to flea beetle pressure. When we had neonics the crop was thick enough to suppress the black grass.

We drilled our osr on the 10th September and it average 4 ton /ha, I know we are not on the scale you are (1400 acres) but winter barley only did 8 ton/ha, winter wheat around the 10 ton/ha and spring barley 9 ton, so overall not to bad, all the milling wheat made made the spec, high hagberg and protein of 14 +, I have just caught up on your videos and find them very interesting, so look forward to the cultivation and drilling ones, regards Simon

Well done James to you and the PX platoon. What a feat to achieve the goal set out under conditions that are so determined by a plethora of KPI’s; topped by the weather. What a milestone for Graham too; wow 50 harvests! Gerald is possibly not the GOAT 😉 The beginning of the next season is yet another challenging journey to endure; looking forward to watching it all over again. It appears that Cousin Michael has got you thinking about the upcoming wheat crop given the demise of oilseedrape .The locality of the milling and the feed groups sound like a given but the variety is going be interesting, given that Michael hinted of new ones at the threshold to combat the grass issues. Onward ⬆️⬆️

Fantastic video once again with what must be the best photo of the 4 combines and chasers for next years PX farms calendar (available in November onwards on the PX website?) I think it was 1976 when our family went to Tiptree Essex fruit picking but when we got to the caravan site there was no fruit to be had, there were cracks in the grass that you could put your arm down it was that dry. No doubt your dad's Ford Capri was Colemans mustard yellow with a black vinyl roof lol. Really enjoy your channel and can't help but laugh along when you start laughing.
