I never take the food out cold because condensation begins to cling to the food which will cause it to spoil in the mylar bags. Always remove the trays while they are still warm as close to the end of the Final Dry as possible. That's the best way to ensure your food will keep. Plus, you can't tell if it actually finished because it's all cold. When you remove the trays while they are hot, your can feel for cool, or even cold, spots, meaning the food isn't all the way dry. Am I making sense? Good luck!

Just like everything else in the world, make sure the filler cap is open or you will slow the drain process. On drips out the front, during the defrost, I note the ice rings go so far under the tray rack you cannot get it out, until they are melted. These ALSO act as dams, blocking the melted water from draining out the back. For that reason, I tip the front of the dryer up a bit higher than the height of the ice rings, about 1". Since doing that, I no longer have pools of water at the front of the machine, when I defrost it.

Great video, only thing I would advise on is your trays should never ever be cold when you’re FD has completed a cycle. It’s actually an indication the food needs to have time added to the cycle and still has moisture. If you’ve stored away food that was cold to the touch at the end of a cycle, even with an O2 absorber, I would check it. I’ve done pineapple and even some thick soups that have taken over 40 hours to complete but I’ve never had a tray even cool to the touch at the end, and for sure not a tray that n the see gloves to touch. The large will require it’s own outlet upgrade. I️ would be sure to double check the specs for the one you want to make sure it’ll work or if you need to get an electrician out there before it arrives so you don’t use up your warranty time waiting for it to be upgraded.

I do not pay attention to the numbers, but I am sure the owners manual would be a great source if you are curious what those mean. I just use the factory setting. Thanks fir commenting and subscribing. I hope to have money more videos about the process. It’s really intimidating at first! But once you complete a bread test and full cycle, you’ll be way more comfortable. If it gives you an end time, not just a percent complete, then add more time. If in doubt, add 8-10 hours. You can always reduce to 30 minutes when you wake up. Also, if you accidentally do not catch it and it finishes, it just turns on refrigeration to keep it from spoiling. So that’s a fail safe. If it ever does that, just start the complete cycle over. More dry time won’t hurt, less dry time will.

When you say "nastiness" from the condensation line, is that gross or contain chemicals or is it just smelly water from the food it dried?

The tube that drains into the bucket is water from the food. It smells like old dirty fridge and a mix of whatever foods you put in there, but in the worse kind of way. I wouldnt say it was a chemical smell. Although there does seem to be a chemical smell inside the FD that I️ try to clean out every 1-3 loads. It does not seem to affect the food though. oh, I️ think I️ understand what you are say. So the actual metal part you put the food into is completely sealed. I think their issue was the oil pump was hiigher than the machine or the tube wasn't looped or something. I haven't had that issue and set it right next to the machine. The part that freezes the food is just like any other food freezer. It's a completely closed system from what I️ can tell. The part surrounding the food is what I wipe down. Thank you for the video, got my freeze dryer last week, just an FYI do a video on what types of food work well and which foods to seriously reconsider, like freeze drying certain meals with dry times, My second attempt was strawberries, they take like 30 Hours to complete, that is a long time for it to run, and I’m not sure about the electric usages or cost, because we have solar panels, but still the time would have been better used on a meal like chicken, broccoli Alfredo.

Thank you for your feedback. I am still trying to figure out what the best and worse things to freeze dry are. So far, I have discovered that anything with grease needs to be rinsed or watered down and refrigerated to get the grease layer off or it will go rancid in the packaging. It seems like the dry times are directly related to the liquid content, which makes sense. I FD my left overs. So everything I FD is something my family eats. Retired at 40 did a video with a voltage meter plugged into the wall. It was like a couple pennies, very minimal power from what I remember. We have solar too and almost always have extra to send back to the grid each month even with running the FD all day. I do not believe that I have done one solid load of any one thing yet. I got pretty close with my zucchini parm chips...anything to eat healthier and take care of our bodies. Typically, I am putting a scoop of this and a scoop of that on the trays and then putting them all in at the same time.

I've tried it both ways but didn't seem to make a difference surprisingly. Draining it while it is hot still does help a little though, but only shaves off seconds. I am not really concerned with it draining quickly myself since it takes 2 hours to defrost before you can run a new cycle anyway. If I complete it too fast, I might forget and think I haven't changed it at all and do it again. haha. I set it to drain and walk away for at least an hour and usually several hours until I can get back to it to dump the water bucket. I do take the cap off now, but it is more to remind me that I need to fill it again.

I️ have the medium size. With the amount I️ do, the healthy things my kids and I️ are more likely to eat from it, the gifts I am able to share, the left overs saved vs tossed, future meals put away for food storage, it is worth it to me. Instead of buying more expensive, but lesser quality already freeze dried foods than what I️ would make at home, I️ am able to convert my left overs to a whole other meal years from now. I would say it is like a vacuum cleaner only more of a lower hum than a higher pitch. It is a vacuum machine that is the loud part. What about heat how hot does it get
@freezedriedfridays
11 ай бұрын
The heat issue is in the summer time. It gets hot in the summer. Imagine a vacuum cleaner motor running for 24 hours. I have to keep a fan on the vacuum part to blow it out of the room, but it is still too hot in the triple digit weather. I try not to run it in the summer.
@freezedriedfridays
11 ай бұрын
To expand on that.. I try not to run it during the summer, because the freeze dryer pops up a notification that my room is too hot and dry times may take longer in a hot room. So to keep it running faster, I avoid running it for 2-3 months in the summer if I can. I just freeze everything to process in the fall.

how much water do you add to rehydrate
@freezedriedfridays
2 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you are rehydrating. Some people weight their food or trays before they put them in and again when they take them out. The difference is how much water you should add back. I rehydrated some Chilli and just kept adding water until it was the consistency that I️ liked. Be sure to let it cook the full 10 minutes and then test the largest piece to make sure it's not dry in the middle.

I've seen a video (by a guy who does mainly Harvest Right drying videos) that shows the newest models (yours) dripping water from the front of the door, where it puddles now. The feet on the newer ones are no longer adjustable and he guesses that's why water goes to the front now. You don't want to freeze dry cannabis. You'll get too much unwanted plant material because it'll more easily crumble- knocking off trichomes. Also you'll lose the terpenes in the process. Best to stick with dry ice for hash... and cheaper too.

What the said in writing that they did to fix it and what the told me when I called after ai got it were two different things. Their customer support is far beyond acceptable. You have to call to get a support case created. They will email you, but don’t rely on that. You HAVE to call each time to talk to them. They assign someone to your case, they schedule and do t show up to the call. You have to call again, and again, each time giving them your support case number. They have a LOT to learn in Regards to supporting their customer. My personal feeling is that the demand for these is so great, that their quality assurance is next to nothing.

@Manja Warner, Take all of this with a grain of salt. One machine out of thousands is not that big of a deal when compared with other appliances. Obviously there are bound to be duds, but the people that comment and review tend to be negative (not talking about this specific comment, just in general about negative posts on all sorts of products). People don't go to Freeze Dryer groups and videos and review boards and say, "My machine is working great again today!" "5 years and no issues!" So the responses will tend to be skewed to the negative side. Also, Harvest Right is the leader in FDs for the general public rather than just pharmaceutical companies. There was one other company in the last year that came out with one and it was almost twice the price. They didn't have "any" bad comments, but they also don't have any machines out to consumers yet. haha. Not sure if they are even still around. Something to consider.

It's condensation from the air. The metal ring gets cold, the moisture in the air attaches to it. When there's too much moisture, it starts dropping. I live in TX. So if you live in a dry climate, you might not experience this. The machine itself is not leaking or dripping. It's from condensation.

Please refer to the owners manual, run a few batches with filtering according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and reach out to the manufacturer if you still feel that you need to throw out the oil each time. The water settles to the bottom and is removed before refilling along with all the debris. You can also see an oil filtering video in my playlist showing exactly how it’s done.
