Maybe testing the flavour of the root is a good idea; iris and cattail grow together where I am and the roots are intertwined and hard to distinguish. If the root tastes bitter then don't eat it

Hi TheMushroomhead86, I'm replying to all of the commenters who have recently posted in a thread I know of with just a name. I don't mind that you have done this, I was just wondering why/how this happened? Lots of people on KZitem do this and I'm curious

Gardening With Puppies The roots (tuber) is the main source of nutrition from this plant. It is almost all starch (carbs). Yes, the stalks are edible. But, unless you intend to make use of the leaves also, say in craft baskets or mats, lots of biomass.

are cattails from swamps with algae good?

I'm not familiar with other bioregions so it would be best for you to find someone locally who could answer your first question for you. The video is referring to "yellow flag" iris. Definitely avoid harvesting plants in areas where they are already being disturbed or having a difficult go of it. You want to find healthy populations of cattail that won't be negatively impacted by your harvesting.

@charronfamilyconnect when the head of the cattails pollen can be shaken loose it can be collected and used as flour. cut a hole in a milk jug big enough for the head and shake

So there is definately no gluten in the root of the cattail? If not then is there anything but wheat that contains gluten? Actually here is a more specific question, can you make risen bread with anything else besides Wheat? Thanks again!
@mikeexits

I can't answer all of your questions, but I do know that Rye and Barley contain gluten. Maybe I'm lucky, but I've found that, while wheat makes me feel sick, I had no problem last time I consumed a barley-derived ingredient. I have to wonder how many other wheat-sensitive people out there are like this, which would mean that rather than being a gluten intolerance, it's more like a wheat allergy, or perhaps being healthy and sensitive reveals problems caused in the body by eating modern wheat, which has been tampered with by Monsanto by mixing GMO seeds with organic, non-GMO seeds. Anyway, just wanted to share. It's been 9 years since you said this but I'm sure someone out there will find this relatively interesting.

Hi there, thanks for the video! I am trying to settle a debate! I was told that you can make flour from the roots of cattail, and that it contains Gluten. But another so called expert told me that the root contains Rhizome but no gluten. Would you happen to know about the validity of this. I just want to know if I can make cakes with the flour from the cattail root on its own without combining with other flours due to the claim that gluten is not contained in the root flour.You know about this?

From researching I've found that a few places have actually done testing and it states that there is no gluten.. and some say gluten like but a lot of things can be gluten like lol without having gluten...
