I escaped prior to brexit, did plenty of research regarding legal residency, pay your taxes, local and income, learn the language, integrate, avoid brit 'enclaves' , I found that they harbour old brexiters with axes to grind and refer to local folk as 'them' and 'they', hence my home in a small town . All done over a period of months, with little outside help other than where to go, later we changed Drivers Licences, everything totally legal, in just the same way as we’d lived in England. So for me brexit hasn’t affected my use of the flat as I do not go out for more than 6 months of the year. I have remained a UK resident. The only real issue is that it costs more, like banking, but that is just part of the deal when you own a property outside of the UK. If I decide to emigrate then I will go through the hoops required which will not be the whole deal for me as I already have a NIE and a property. I work in Real Estate in Tenerife, about 10 years ago we sold a property of a British owner, I spoke to the owner on the phone who was in the UK and asked him to send some keys he had taken back with him about 4 in total for the garage one for the main door etc. The keys were posted via courier I think it was msw, a day before the delivery a woman from the couriers rang and told my colleague it would be delivered the following day and the price was 72 euros for customs duty, after my colleague told me this I thought second hand keys dont have any value so I checked on line if this was correct. On the Spanish government site it states any goods from another country is payable if the Item has a value of over 50 euros and if the value is above 50 euro there is a charge for the VAT on the difference above the 50 euros, which in mainland Spain is, I think 20% vat (here in the Canaries its 7%) it said the parcel must have a large yellow customs sticker on it to say it had been inspected with the price due and stamped by the customs officer. The next day we had the parcel delivered to the office the man presented a bill from their office not the customs office for 72 Euros. I took the parcel and check it for a yellow sticker, I asked him where was the yellow customs sticker he said in the office, I said ok you bring the customs yellow sticker and I'll pay, he said shall I go to the police, I said it's up to you just bring the yellow customs sticker and I pay..he left the office and never came back..since then I've learned from other people this type of thing is common with some courier businesses.

We are U.K. residents and have a substantial second home in Menorca which we have owned for over 15 years. We have two cars and a scooter there and pay our taxes (although ‘income tax’ is payed in U.K. as we are not Spanish residents). Additionally, because we own a home in Spain but are not formal residents,we also have to pay a ‘non resident tax’ every year, which in our case amounts to some €1450 per year…(how this is justified I simply do not know!). We have formal NIE certificates and comply to local laws in every sense. Due to Brexit we can only now spend 90 days in any rolling 180, this is a major issue for us as it’s a nightmare to track goings and comings and results in us staying away from Menorca for lengthy periods often when we would prefer to be there, but are restricted from doing so. If Spain just enforced 180 days visit during any calendar year, this would be fine, but the ‘rolling’ 180 means we have to stay away much more, so we are not spending money in Spain, buying food, petrol, using electricity etc, so it’s ‘lose lose’ …surely enforcing 180 days in any calendar year makes much better sense? We are seriously considering selling as we pay a lot of money to run our Spanish Villa and if we cannot be there when we would prefer to be, then it makes no sense. Not looking for sympathy here, just looking to apply some common sense to Spanish Brexit rules.

I m not clear on why British companies are charging VAT on items being purchased and shipped by themselves to Europe. If the product is being sold and shipped out of the U.K. it should be sold “VAT free for export “, the supplier should NOT be collecting products on exported products. A certificate of export should be supplied along with an invoice clearly showing the total charges excluding VAT but noting the shipping charges, taxes usually IVA but possibly other taxes and duties depending on the product should then be raised on the cost of the product plus shipping and any insurances if charged. You should NOT pay sales tax twice the British companies are wrong to be charging VAT on goods for export.

I was a resident in Spain for 14 years until the economic downturn & the death of my Spanish partner. Spent the past 7 years in the UK and decided to return in my campervan. Staying at a site in Calpe which is predominantly Belgique & French. The Spanish staff here are very friendly (helps that I'm fluent), but as for the Belgiques they are quite unfriendly indeed (besides being a bit wierd I.M.O.). Whilst I've spent the past week going out every day to investigate possible work opportunities, I have noticed that the Belgiques just stay on site all day (it seems). They all have little Belgique flags stuck to their awnings...Why? I can see your number plates. They don't say hello and look at me with total distain. I mentioned this to the receptionist who rolled her eyes in agreement. I can only conclude that because of 'Brussels' that they feel a sense of entitlement & superiority over others...I find them totally arrogant (worse than the French!). I hope my job search works out, though I'm not pinning too many hopes on it at the moment...Things (and the general mood) have really changed here...take heed!

Whinging pom an Australian term. Seems to apply wherever they move to . I can never fathom why the cling to their citizenship even after a living decades abroad. A citizenship is merely a permission to live within a specified geographic area without needing another specific permission to do so. I am on my second one for decades now. If I would be fifty years younger i might give another country a go to see what life would be there permanently. “Patriotism is, fundamentally, a conviction that a particular country is the best in the world because you were born in it....” ― George Bernard Shaw Anyone who thinks that their country of birth is the best in the world and who then does live in another country with the intention of staying long term is just a hypocrite.

One of the grievances that some UK residents have regarding the high level of immigration is that they claim that, overall, immigrants take out more in services than they put in; commit more crime; make disproportionate demands on the NHS and drive houses prices and rents up while depressing wages. I wonder if the Spanish have similar concerns re the British and whether there are any statistics to support this view. In other words, is Spain any longer a good place to retire to for anyone, let alone Brits? The answer is a definite No. Go where you are treated best. Lots of places in the world offer better options to retire to than Spain. Perhaps next door in Portugal to start with. However, if you are on a pension of less than $1000.00 a month then the options get smaller but nonetheless achievable. We as a family have waited years to save up and look for a holiday home or retirement home on the Costa Del Sol post Brexit/pre Covid. Unlike many who retire there we have even been taking Spanish classes on and off for years and my son is engaged to a Spanish girl living in the UK.
