I'm sure you will be happy. I have had mine for some months now, and it does live up to the expectations. I'll soon be doing a long term review, and - spoiler alert - there's only positives to say about this lens, except maybe only price which is to be expected which this amazing lens from Hasselblad.

Agree, that's a cool thing to have, and if I used face recognition regularly I would probably have "Switch Face" on the control ring instead of aperture. Maybe on my next travel if I do a lot of local portraits I will try that feature.

Very helpful review. A 90mm V lens is on its way to me, at last - hurrah! When it arrives it will complete the most fantastic landscape photography system I have ever owned. Medium Format, state of the art camera (X2D) and 3 lenses. 90mm, 55mm, 38mm. Goodbye heavy cameras and lenses and large backpacks. Many thanks

Yes agree to that, it's an amazing job Hasselblad has done here. And those new lenses with 1/4000 leaf shutter, super sharp, compact and pretty lightweight, that is truly amazing. By the way I think it's the first time any manufacturer has been able to implement a leaf shutter this fast. And when you think about how large the shutter in the 90V has to be due to the focal length / aperture combination, it's an engineering feat of dimensions. I guess that's the reason it took Hasselblad more than a year to get this lens out.

Hallo Bo, I like your reviews so much. Most with the Canon FD Lenses, I had FD from 20 to 200mm. I am interested on a review between the XCD 90/3,2 and the XCD 90/2,5, could you say something about the differences and is it worth to change the old to the new? Thank you so much 👍
@key2adventure

Hallo Werner. I would love to do that, though I don't own the f3,2 version anymore, but used it extensively for a period of a year while waiting for the 2,5. I could do a video comparing the two, but what I have promised on my channel earlier is an in-depth review of the 90V f2,5 lens. I have already done a first impressions video, and when I do the in-depth video I will definitely go into where the 3,2 and the 2,5 differs (spoiler alert: always in favor of the 2,5). The conclusion is - at least for me - there is no real comparison between the two, the 2,5 is better in any respect.

I wonder why nobody recorded shutter sound. Especially in comparison to other XCD lenses. There are a lot of reviews how loud it is. Some people even returned it thinking it’s faulty 😳 I’m still waiting for mine, but I have 55mm and shutter is almost silent. On 135mm it’s a bit louder but very pleasant sound still. I’m curious if 90 is even louder.

Nice images. Have you used the original 90mm f/3.5? I own that one, and it makes the nicest looking images of any of the X series lens that I've had. Thanks for the review and for the promised follow-up after you've had it for a while longer.

Thanks for your comment. Yes I owned the 90mm f3.2 for a year and travelled with it and my 45p lens several times. I wasn't quite happy with it, though the image quality was pretty good. It is bigger, heavier and much, much slower focusing than the new 90V. And the amount and quality of background blur is much better on the new lens. But the 90 f3.2 is a good Hasselblad lens.

Afraid to shame HASSELBLAD? Y say the 3.2 is heavier ,bigger, slow focusing and the blurr backround is worster. and a good ,pretty good.Y do'nt say the 90V is much sharper and has more light in the images, right. I want to change my 90 2.2 for the 90 V2.5 ,its a lot o money, need stronger reasons.

@@theovanantwerpen No not afraid to shame Hasselblad. Just liked the 90 f3.2 a lot, got many of fine images with it. Therefore, not unsatisfied with it, but the 90V is definitely a much better lens, not only optically but also in handling due to the smart features like the AF-Manual focus switch and especially the function ring, that I love to use for aperture settings. But it all comes down to cost, I sold my 90 3.2 for around 1500€, and I think you can get it even cheaper today, whereas the 90V is around 4200€ at least until you can get one slightly used (European mainland prices, might be different in UK and the USA). Therefore, it all depends on what you can spend. If you really need the 90V then it is a stunning lens, but the 90 f3.2 will get most jobs done nicely.

Nice review. I am also interessted in buying this lens. It quite as pity that you had to wait for this lens that long. I wounder for that reason the the control ring is de-clickable. Mon-clicking controls are reasonalble for video that also records sound. This lens has hard stops for manual focus. It would be interessiting if infinity at the manual control in the hard-stopped position acutally is infinity. (My Canon lenses focus even "past infinity".) What about the reisistance of the manual focus ring? Right resistance or too little friction?) These questions may the addressed in your future extended review. I am looking forward to it.

Thanks for your comments. I'll definitely look at the suggested areas in my in depth review. One comment on the clickable/non-clickable control ring, I would use clicks for ISO or aperture, but not for anything else.

Thank you sir for a wonderful review. I have a question. I currently use a Pentax 645, but will be switching to the X2D 100C in the next few months. What is the sharpest lens, in your opinion, that is compatible with the X2D 100C? Thanks!! - Steve

Thank you very much for your feedback. Off course it depends on what focal lens you want, but I would say that all the new lenses the 38mm, the 55mm, and the 90mm are very sharp maybe not so much the 28mm, but also some of the older lenses like the 21mm are very sharp, and off course the 120mm macro like many other macro lenses is extremely sharp. If you want one that is close to a "normal" lens I would go for the 55mm. I don't know enough about the 65mm to recommend it, but it's focal length is close to a 50 to 55mm on a full frame camera. Good luck with the switch, the Hasselblad cameras wont disappoint you.

My 90mm V lens has arrived and, as you said, in this video, it is excellent. The only aspect which I find disconcerting is the somewhat loud sound made in the lens when a photograph is taken. Is this normal? The 38mm and 55mm lenses are quiet when taking a photograph. I would really appreciate any comments you may have on this and whether I should be concerned. By the way I have followed you on facebook!

Sure I will comment on that. Consider how much larger the aperture is in the 90mm when it has to have the same f2.5 as the two other lenses. That means the shutter has to cover a much larger area, and thus travel a lot larger distance, and I think that's why it makes somewhat more noise than the 38 and 55mm lenses. Mine does exactly the same, and I have heard the same from others, so you should consider this normal. It doesn't bother me, hope it doesn't spoil it for you either. Best regards, Bo

Thank you so much Bo for your helpful comments and the science behind the need for the 90mm lens to cover a larger area, at f2.5. I thought the noise was a technical fault - but clearly this is not the case. In all other aspects the lens is superb and well worth waiting for. I can now use it with complete confidence. The X2D camera and lenses handle so much better than the Fuji 50sii which I now only use with a long telephoto. Many thanks again

Ach, Mensch, ja, ja, ist ganz ja schoen. You are a bad influence on me. LOL I am on the list for one at B&H but will not see it until probably February. I am thinking, also, of the 120mm macro. The 90V does seem a very nice lens. By February I should have made up my mind. Thanks for the review.

Sorry for even more bad influence 🙂 but it is definitely worth waiting for. I have already completely forgotten the one year long wait, just happy to have it now. I had the previous 90mm f32. lens, and wasn't anywhere near as happy for that as I already is for this one. It's just an amazing piece of lens Hasselblad has made, and I'm not even paid or sponsored in any way by them to say this.

@@key2adventure The unfortunate truth with HB is that you get what you pay for. I am amazed with what comes out of my X2D + XCD 55V. The 120 3.5 macro arrives tomorrow. That is supposed to be a very sweet lens. HB optics (Nittoh, I believe) are just wonderful. It is such a wonderful camera.

@@zoltankaparthy9095 Happy shooting with the 120 mm. If I should have another lens for my X2D, it would be either a 21 mm wideangle or a 135 mm with the 1.7 telephoto adapter. The latter can almost provide macro photography with the adapter mounted as it provides a 1:3.4 "enlargement" ratio. The 120 mm would be too close to my 90 mm, and it still only get you a bit closer than the 135 mm (1:2 enlargement ratio).
