Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) - The suspect accused in a violent hate crime earlier this week was arraigned on several charges Friday in Rochester City Court, where he continued to lash out.
Alexander Ortiz, who's facing charges in two separate incidents, is accused of attacking a victim in the city's bustling Monroe Avenue neighborhood Tuesday night, yelling homophobic slurs and striking them multiple times.
"(When) our officer got down there, we began to interview the victim, and we learned that there was a vehicle that appeared to be following the victim," explained Rochester Police Captain Greg Bello. "When he started to walk away from him, he drove directly at the victim, causing him to jump out of the way to avoid being hit by the car."
Police say the victim tried running into his workplace, but Ortiz followed him inside.
