LITTLE INFO ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE CASTLE:
The Lords of Kunšperk built Turn Castle near Velenje at the beginning of the 13th century, and it was managed by their knights. In 1207, Knight Richero de Turre was mentioned, in 1250 the Kunšperk knights Engelbert, Gundakar, and Oton, in 1255 Rudolf, in 1257 Gundakar, and in 1278 Leopold. The Turn family partially acquired the castle, and in 1296 Gundakar and his wife Doroteja sold their share to the Counts of Vovbre, which was partly theirs and partly an acquisition of the Aquileian and Vovbre counts. The Vovbre counts soon acquired the other half of the castle and settled their family there, who also took the name Turn, distinguished by a different coat of arms. When the Vovbre family died out in 1322, the free Lords of Žovnek inherited the castle and the estate, and they granted it as a fief to their vassals, the Turn family.
The Turn family long considered themselves personally free and only acknowledged in a court case with the Counts of Celje in Žalec in 1358 that their house belonged to the Vovbre counts. A year later, a document was issued in which four Turn brothers testified that they held Turn Castle as a fief from the Counts of Celje. In 1439, during the war between the Celje family and the Habsburgs, the Celje forces, led by their commander Jan Vitovec, destroyed Turn Castle, but it was soon rebuilt.
When the Celje family died out in 1456, the castle became a ducal property. Until 1510, the Turn family occupied it, then from 1516 the Herič knights. In 1635, rebellious peasants seized the castle. From 1732, Baron Johann Jožef Gabelkhoven, who also owned the nearby Šalek Castle, was the owner and united the two estates, so the same owners held both castles from then on. Before World War II, Knight Komersinsky owned the castle. Despite many modifications, the castle remains one of the few well-preserved medieval castles in Slovenia. Currently, the deteriorating castle houses apartments.
Locals believe that Turn Castle is haunted. They claim to hear strange sounds emanating from the old, crumbling walls, especially on quiet, moonlit nights. Echoes of clashing swords, the cries of fallen knights, and eerie, disembodied screams fill the air, as if the ancient battles and tragic events of its past are replaying in an endless loop. These ghostly sounds have become a part of local legend, adding an aura of mystery and fear to the historic site.
Adding to the castle's eerie reputation is the story of a witch who is said to have lived there about 300 years ago. According to legend, she still occupies the castle in spirit form, and locals sometimes find bundles of herbs left at the castle entrance, believed to be placed there by the witch herself. These herbs are thought to have magical properties, and their appearance is often seen as a sign that the witch is still watching over the castle, maintaining her ancient connection to the place. This legend adds another layer of supernatural intrigue to Turn Castle, making it a focal point for tales of the mysterious and the macabre.
