I have taken this trip, The long hike down, swimming in the pools of the falls. It was one of the most memorable times of my life. I would love to take the trip again but it is a rugged trip that you must physically prepare for. Even if you ride the mules down it is still challenging.

It's really too bad it doesn't look quite like that anymore. A flash flood washed away a lot of the landscape, but the is work to repair it. Still a wonderous place to visit, and enjoy! I was there this past June and LOVED IT!

It is definitely worth the hike - I think you can also hire the locals to horseback you in and out. It is definitely one of the most beautiful places on this planet - when I hiked down I ended up having blisters all over my feet but they healed within two days of being in this water...You definitely would want to camp a few days to be able to recuperate from the long hike in - took me six hours to hike in and nine hours to hike out with a 40 lb pack on my back....but SOOOO worth it!

I swam right up to the waterfall and behind it, I didn't go through the center only on the side. I made sure I didn't get any water in my mouth. Upstream in the indian village there are lots of horses and livestock and the runoff goes into the river. Most rivers are like that but it was directly upstream. I didn't get sick at all. The water was cool and refreshing.

To bad you haven't had the opportunity in your life to go there. Then you would understand what you are seeing is true and unaltered video shots. It's a trip I will never forget, I will be going again one day soon. Set a goal to go there in this lifetime it's a wonderfully beautiful place. Also make sure to bring something helpful & useful for the Indians on the reservation they will thank you in kindness 10x over. They are dirt poor but are lucky to live in such a beautiful place. Sure you can hike it in a day. But plan for 2 or 3 so you can enjoy it. You can camp right next to the river just below the falls, its awesome! There are a few other falls just below the campground. Starting with Mooney Falls. The Colorado River is just a few more miles down from the camping area. There is more and more to explore all over. I definitely plan to stay at least 3 or 4 days the next time I go.

When I saw this place my first thought was that it should be a National Park, but then they don't let you swim or do anythng really fun at National Parks, so it's okay. I'm glad it's on a reservation at least. :)

You would have to be pretty desperate to drink that water. It passed through the Indian village which has lots of cattle and horses and other animals where the run off goes into the river as the lowest point. There are most likely other cattle grazing areas it passes through miles back also.
