I would rather they charged more and kept the same lager just like all the breweries have reduced the alcohol content like Hop House 13 ,5% to 4.6% ,they do this as they pay less tax and charge us the same so they get more profit 👎

Hi Paul, it was me during your live stream a couple of weeks ago that said I was drinking Rheinbacher and it tasted different which is when you said you would review it again. I think I have more bad news! A few days later i went to Lidl as i thought I will try Perlenbacher again. I found it on the shelf at £2.79 for 4 cans and thought great they have made them even cheaper as they used to be £2.99. Picked some up and noticed straight away that the cans are now 440ml but they used to be 500ml, I thought here we go again have Lidl changed Perlenbacher? Got home and poured a can into a glass and took a mouthful - just tasteless to me and actually reminds me of Carlsberg which is also tasteless. I also think Perlenbacher used to say produced in France but now the cans don't say where the beer is produced. Sad times!

Got 16 cans and a bottle last night. I noticed that they had changed over the last few weeks. It's a pity as I have only been using ALDI for about six or seven weeks now and was glad to find some decent enough cheaper lager. The main reason that I started to buy Rheinbacher.was to help stock up on my Christmas booze, buy the cheaper beer and put away the bottles that i normally get each week..

What a disaster! I recall the first time I had this last year, while on furlough, based on many recommendations(including yours) - I did a 50min round trip to my nearest Aldi in the rain, and was very happy and impressed with both the bottles and the cans! I would rather they put the price up by say 20% than tinker with the recipe! The probably delusional optimist in me hopes maybe its only temporary due to logistics that its being brewed here - but realistically I doubt that's the case. Krombacher and Perlenbacher for me now!

Bought these cans today and found it hard to drink. I was expecting a lot more from it. I got the cheap smell and taste. Preferred the perlenbacher I got a couple weeks back. Might try the bottle next time but if that disappoints i'll be giving up on it. Just glad it wasn't all I bought this shopping trip. The better stuff was from lidl and home bargains though.

Hi Jamie, yeah it’s a massive shame that they’ve decided to change the recipe. Right now the lager I’m going for is San Miguel. In Tesco you can get 8 x 330ml cans of the Spanish 5.4% version for £5, and it’s delicious. Maybe worth a try if you’ve one local? Cheers 🍻

Hi Paul this is becoming quite common Stella Artois Budweiser Becks (all brewed by the InBev group) all had there ABV reduced several times since 2012 after I believe there were revisions made to the amount of duty breweries had to pay on alcoholic drinks dependent on the strength in order to tackle problem drinking. The problem is breweries have decided to weaken the alcohol content to save on duty but these changes affect the taste/complexion of these drinks which means many lose that premium lager feel to them and many customers are unhappy and have stopped buying them it shows they've no respect for what made these brands popular in the first place and they are just being greedy imo :)
@davemcwilliam1227

I won't buy Stella again as it's too weak, so I happened upon Gallereux. Very drinkable. Nothing against weaker beer - some of my favourite Craft beers and also Carling are around 3.5-4% and are welcome in my beer fridge anytime. It's just that I also like to keep a Premium strength 5% beer in too, and Stella is no longer in that category, so it's San Miguel, Heineken or Gallereux type beers. Now if only they did Peroni in 440 or 500ml cans...

What a solid KZitem channel you've got here, mate. Absolute quality. And I'm a Northerner! I have been shopping at Aldi since they first came here in the 90s, and now defected to Lidl because of the quality of beers and food, too over recent years. Frozen veg used to be beautiful. Now it just tastes like weed killer. Since 2 weeks ago, I'm giving Lidl a go, and have just acquired a collection of the Down South Ales, the Woodgate Pear Cider is far superior to the Aldi Taurus Pear Cider - which tastes like PISS. Watching your channel now with the Aldi and Lidl competition. Having just watched your more recent vid, might have to try Aldi's Anti-Establishment IPA, now though although I would have given the Lidl Counter Culture a 6+. I'm a Lidl customer now, though! :-)

Compare this with Lidl's Perlenbacher which is now brewed (if that's the right word) in France, with the same sort of drop in alcoholic strength. I suspect that this is just for the British market. Over the last few years, several British beers and ales have also reduced their alcoholic contents, mainly to avoid paying large amounts in tax, a curse which has affected British beers badly. The Ringwood Brewery is one of note - it brews a wonderful ale called Old Thumper which, if I remember correctly, used to be 5.6% or thereabouts. Some 5 years ago, it reduced the alcoholic content by over 5%, and many dedicated drinkers of the stuff abandoned it on the spot. However, Ringwood Brewery claimed they saved over £50k in tax in the first year alone. So that's the problem - British governments obsessed with raising taxes on everything. I would have thought that the Tories would have known better - Thatcher must be turning in her grave.

In a Pilsner style most all the sugar has to turn to alcohol, bumps the Alcohol volume to at least 5% or over. Years ago they did the same with Carlsberg Export, they nerfed it from a ballpark 5.2% and began producing the drink in the UK. Ruined.

I know in Australia Carlton United breweries changed their VB beer formula from 4.9% ALC to 4.6% ALC to save money but at the same time they lost 15% profit off VB and lost #1 best beers in Australia. VB loves in Australia didn't like the change so Carlton United breweries was forced to go back to the old recipe 4.9% ALC due to the 15% loss in sales.

I would think that to guarantee UK supplies to Aldi post Brexit they have licenced production to a UK brewery. Also German hops and malts will now cost more due to import tax so they will have to cut back on quantities which will affect ABV and flavour. So its probably nothing to do with Aldi changing anything to improve bottom line but everything to do with idiots voting to make things more expensive.

Now the loyal ALDI clusters who buy other ALDI ptoducts and the beer have lost out and some dudes are kicking up stink about the c@#ts that ruined it for them ie the lager heads who were just plain taking advantage of cut price quality beer.
