I like the neutral straight man role of the host. Let's remember they all read off the autocue ( the hosts, I mean). Angus Deayton was also like this. A 'straight' host, in my view, anchors the show and allows the comedians to shine. It also makes it more like a traditional old fashioned quiz, which I think a lot of people like. Anyhow, there's my tuppence-worth. All the best to you.

Total respect for Clive! 🌟 Historic show! 15:54 I’m so surprised how pokey the chamber of the House is. (Compared for example to the Canadian House which is so vast all 338 MPs have their own designated desks.) Angela is scrunched up against Keir… Can MPs sit anywhere or do they have designated places? Also, I do believe we see last week’s excellent guest Jess Philips (in a purple jacket) standing. (Why do they stand? Like here in Canada, to get the attention of the speaker to ask the next question?)
@gilbokhan
Жыл бұрын
Bit late, and unsure of value, but... There are no officially designated spaces (would hate to be overseeing *that* in recent times, to say nothing if plaques were involved), but there are conventions that govern places in the HoC. The frontbenches nearest the Speaker are the preserve of the Prime Minister (Speaker's right) and Leader of the Opposition (Speaker's left), or whoever is deputising for them at that time, and their respective cabinet/ministers and shadows. Outside of this, spaces are more loosely defined but observation indicates that internal party politics and/or personal optics play a hand in where a member chooses to sit, if they can. Certain long-tenured members or groupings tend to carve out their own niches for themselves, such as the 'Awkward Squad Bench' for semi-dissident Labour MPs when in opposition. (Not sure what the rules are for other party leaders, but it would appear they are allocated a general section further from the speaker and their party members cluster around that.) Standing is indeed the method to get the attention of the Speaker for questions. Unless there is no other option (as you might have guessed, there simply isn't room on the HoC benches for all 650 MPs).
@garrick3727

@@garrick3727 indeed technically you’re supposed to sit at your own desk. But you can go to an unoccupied desk behind someone giving a speech so it looks better on tv. Generally for the daily Question Period at 2, the House is pretty well full and everyone sits at their own, but for “committees of the whole” (debates about a law), it goes down to above quorum. Fair’s fair, MPs have many other things to do, especially ministers and committee chairs. Oh, and votes aren’t in a separate division chamber. Division is done at one’s desk. The speaker calls for the ayes and then the nays, one stands for each division at one’s desk (mandatory) and then nods as one’s name is called out. The speakers and the clerks have to know the names and faces of all the MPs. There must be a video of it somewhere.

She's getting a lot of criticism, but personally - as a leftist, an anti-imperialist & anti-authoritarian - I think what Liz Truss has done is inspiring. In just 6 weeks, she's done more for the Labour Party than Kier Starmer has managed in two years. All of a sudden, a real chance at Irish reunification seems possible, there's talk of Scottish independence & the conservative wing in Parliament seems genuinely blindsided. She's done more damage in a month than the IRA has managed in the last 20 years. Critical support to Comrade Liz. Genuinely remarkable.
