I don't really think the whole inflation thing is all that accurate in reality though. Cost of Living was also much lower back then. Personally, a $20 bill today, feels like a $20 in the 90's when it comes to entertainment media and video game hardware. I had no problem spending $170 on new Neo•Geo AES games in 1990, but I still won't buy a $70 AAA game today. I feel it's too much, and if you wait a couple months, the prices drop substantially. The reason I feel games were so expensive back in the day, aside from the "Nintendo Tax", was of course the expensive ROM chips. This is also why many early SNES games ran with so much slow down. They would use cheaper "SlowROM" and then, when prices dropped, they'd use "FastROM" chips. Anyway.. My two cents.

I agree 100% that using an an inflation calculator does correctly reflect the actual "cost" of things in the past - just like you demonstrated. To be fair, the video did use a slide with "nominal" price comparison, which I presume took more data in, and you could tell the graph had not really climbed since the 90s. The whole "games used to cost 200% more" narrative is pure dame for gamers, because it can be used to raise new prices today - and indeed it has. I've given up on (almost) all single game purchases. What is true, is that we have more options today, from general sales, to services like Game Pass. These are not applicable for Nintendo, though :)

For anyone wondering, Prison City absolutely slaps. The AVGN games are super fun too, especially if you've got some friends over (or online) watching you constantly fail. Good times. On a side note, I would've circled the DS9 station and Exosquad E-Frame too. Both shows kind of had a lot of common themes. Sadly, hardly anyone knows how much Exosquad rules.

I try to tell people all the time that games are just about cheaper now than they have ever been when you take inflation into account. People complain about games moving up to $70, but they were at $60 since the release of the Xbox 360 in 2005. By inflation alone, that $60 from 2005 would be about $95 today. So that is actually where games would be if they just stayed the same value, but they have fallen way below it now

Physical media dying really pisses me off and the day they stop releasing physical games (even tho most physical games have like 200MB of data and the rest still has to be downloaded) is the day I simply stop buying new games and consoles. Theres still enough of a black log in my library to last me years of gameplay. People won't own shit in the future and *they will* like it. Just not people like us with enough sense left.

While sure games are technically cheaper now, minimum wages have not risen in nearly 20 years and just about everything is even more expensive than it was just a few years ago. More modern gamers with all the microtransactions and DLC are significantly more expensive than ever before and more profitable too.
@bigbabatunde1218

In the UK back in the early to mid 90s there wasn''t even a minimum wage. Some people were getting paid sub £100 a week, before or after tax. Some people were getting paid £80 a week, so paying £40 for a new game was astronomical, but lots of people still had games. 🤷

Interesting ... I thought I'd remembered AAA titles being $49.99 back in the 1990s but looks like they were actually $59.99 like many basic versions of games still are today (though the super spiffy gold mega deluxe versions of modern games can run you over $100 ... and they may not even include all the DLC even at that price ...).

If you account for inflation with video games then they cost about the same now, 50-60 usd for the quality titles, 20-30 usd for cheaper quality titles You'd pay 19.99 or 29.99 for a new game cartridge, 10.99 for a cheap one In 1977 20 bucks usd had the same spending power as 100usd, 1987 that same 20 bucks had about 55 usd spending power, by 1997 its barely 40usd equivalent spending power in 2023 dollars adjusted for inflation Video games didn't get more expensive your dollar just lost its value

Spending 200 bucks on an atari 2600 in 1977 was equivalent to a 1000 usd purchase in 2023 An atari 800 was equivalent to a 4000usd purchase in 1979 So you'd be paying over 5 grand in 2023 dollars to get both a game console and pc back then then add a floppy drive for the computer and a composite monitor Get to 10 grand quick
