When he hires and gets out of the way, he's successful, like with Trump Tower, If Trump had not run his own campaign in 2020, he might have won.

It's clear from this clip Roy Cohn knows McCarthy has majorly messed up. I'd love to know if he was also horrified that the agreement between him and Joe Welch was being violated. Cohn was clearly a hugely unsavoury figure (to say the least), but I suspect he couldn't have been such an effective operator if he hadn't been able to keep his promises. Fascinating to think that Welch had planned the whole thing. That's a Grandmaster-level chess-move.

Yes and no, there is the Tydings Committee in theory sought to evaluate some of the names McCarthy had. I say "in theory" because anyone who has read the historical documentation know the committee more so existed to attack McCarthy than to actually evaluate his claims, with the committee being divided across partisan lines and claiming an objectively false fact (the idea that the McCarthy list was the Lee-list). The reason this is a lie is that as covered by some historians and journalist of the 124 names McCarthy submitted to Tydings in writing 48 were not from the Lee list (meaning 38% of the list was not the Lee-list) and 68 of the names listed were still in the state department which was used to show that even those present in both the Lee list and McCarthy's list were primarily used to show that such charges of communism hadn't been dealt with as Tydings would claim they had. In one particular instance of a person interrogated by the Tydings Committee there was a peculiar case. A "Earl Browder" (this in particular curiously omitted from his wikipedia page) refused to answer some questions for the committee, this resulted in a contempt citation (something the committee never threatened him with). So to his defense as his one and only witness, this previous communist boss calls to the stand senator Joe McCarthy. When asked if Browder had been in contempt McCarthy said this "in all my experience as a judge, and a lawyer, I don't know if I have ever seen more perfect cooperation between a witness and the chairman of the committee. When the witness refused to testify it appeared to be with the wholehearted approval of the chair. The chair, in fact, was not interested in eliciting information from the witness which would indicate the presence of Communist in the government ... The witness came down and took a very active part in what the chair was trying to do, and that was to conduct a cover up." Browder's defense attorney also concurred arguing that Browder had been acting upon what the majority of the committee had wanted. Browder using this defense was AQUITTED. Unfortunately everything I said has not been on tape (to my knowledge) however you are free to search for books or track down the sources for what I said if you want. Typically if you look up a case with Browder this case will not come up as there is another popular case involving him, and to put it bluntly the case I mentioned isn't even on his wikipedia page likely because it would come with the tacit admission that the Tydings Committee (and thus subsequent attacks of McCarthy which followed it) was blatantly political.

Just read a biography on the guy - in truth, his undoing started a few months before this, when he held an open session investigating the connection between Annie Lee Moss, a soft-spoken Black woman, and tried to bully her into admitting that she and her husband were communist spies (they weren't, though her husband did know some people who would turn out to be communist sympathizers). The newspapers cast her as a poor, defenseless, uneducated Black woman against McCarthy the bully, and people started to believe that characterization. The Army-McCarthy hearings were the culmination of an investigation launched by McCarthy against the Army's top brass. This hearing exposed him for two reasons: one, it was, up to that point, the most heavily televised event in the US senate's history, allowing everyone to see just how McCarthy operated under pressure; and two, his targets up to this point had not been any organization the public cared about (the State Department, the CIA, some rando soldiers, etc), but these hearings happened less than a decade after the US Army was instrumental in ending World War II. He could not convince the American people that he was the good guy in this one. This particular moment, the one in the video, is remembered because it was the first time anyone had publicly repudiated McCarthy for his conduct and been agreed with by everyone watching. What this video doesn't show is that the audience in the Senate erupted into applause and the senator who was leading the hearings had to call a recess. It was the moment that solidified to everyone - Welsch, Cohn, everyone but McCarthy himself - that he no longer had the favor of the American people. For a bully and clout-chaser like McCarthy, that means the beginning of the end. It's no coincidence he died four years after this, this three-week set of hearings ended his career.

Browder's defense attorney also concurred arguing that Browder had been acting upon what the majority of the committee had wanted.

This video finally clarifies the context of this historical dialog. The leftists have always taken Welch's comments out of context as if he was attacking McCarthy's anti-communist actions. However, this video clearly shows that Welch was upset for an entirely different reason - McCarthy broke his agreement of not mentioning Fisher during this session. Welch even asks Roy Cohn whether he had personally attacked him, referring to the agreement.

From your mouth to God's ear, eh? Devoutly to be wished! Really, if McCarthy were around today, he'd be as popular with the Trumpists as McCarthy was with the Republicans of his day. Ike--fully knowing that McCarthy was a cur--would not publicly criticize him!

Roy Cohn was exempt from the draft and military service because he, in his own words, was “a first cousin to a pixie.” Joe McCarthy served in the Pacific in WW II as a tail gunner on a bomber and he was proud of his nickname “Tail Gunner Joe.” Because of his closeness and his obvious affection for Roy Cohn, perhaps McCarthy’s WW II nickname had an additional aspect of meaning. McCarthy would die of complications from alcoholism and Roy Cohn, before his death from AIDS/HIV, served as a lawyer for Donald Trump.
