Have you used ketamine as premedication in Dogs and Cats? - NAVE Discussion #3
Hello NAVE Crew, how are you? In this video, we're going to discuss the use of ketamine as a sedative in the pre-anesthetic medication of dogs and cats.
This practice has become common, but do we really achieve sedation? If we consider the primary effect of pre-anesthetic medication, which is sedation, ketamine won't help us. It has the ability to stimulate certain parts of the brain and inhibit others. Moreover, it doesn't promote muscle relaxation, a desirable characteristic in pre-anesthetic medication.
It's true that those who use ketamine in pre-anesthetic medication administer much lower doses than those that would cause dissociative anesthesia. However, there are few studies that have evaluated the efficacy of ketamine in "subanesthetic" doses as a sedative. One study with dogs showed that ketamine (1 or 2 mg/kg) worsened sedation in dogs that received 3 mcg/kg dexmedetomidine + 0.3 mg/kg methadone. In cats that received 7 mcg/kg dexmedetomidine + 0.3 mg/kg methadone + 1 mg/kg ketamine, the addition of ketamine improved sedation.
