"LIVING WITH THE EDGE" - Jim Calhoun, the former University of Connecticut men's head basketball coach who led his teams to three national NCAA titles, shares his thoughts on basketball subjects and the ways in which events in his youth shaped his life.
The 30-minute interview was recorded August 29, 2023, at Calhoun's University of Saint Joseph office in West Hartford, CT.
This edited presentation is the second of four segments.
In Part 2 of Jim Calhoun's "Living with the Edge" - four part series - Calhoun talked about his first encounter with legendary Maryland basketball coach Charles "Lefty" Driesell. Driesell, who died Feb. 17, 2024, was in his third season at Maryland and won the 1972 NIT title that year. The then-29-year-old Calhoun had just become the coach at Northeastern University in Boston.
The two coaches met during lunch at a Nike-sponsored event in Hawaii in 1972. Calhoun said that he and his wife, Pat, had been looking for a place to sit when he heard someone yell his name. It was Lefty.
