@Best Binocular Reviews I have watched your videos and I appreciate all that you do. I know this review was from 2016, but I purchased these from Hawke in 2020. I’m a new birder :) I returned many binoculars due to chromatic abberation. (All Birds do not have purple beaks to match purple heads.). After a lot of research and field testing, I believe ED is the way to go. I have a question for you: I looked at the specs for the Hawke Endurance ED 8x42 and the Hawke Frontier ED 8x42. There’s a big jump in price. Because you are the only you tuber who reviewed both, did you notice a big difference between the Endurance ED and the Frontier ED? Thank you. PS. I subscribed. Your videos are so informative and professional.

Hi, thanks for the question. Yes, I agree with you, when used correctly, good quality ED glass can noticeably reduce color fringing, but this is not always the case. As you expect, the top-end models usually do better, but not always. Going over all my Hawke Reviews: www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/binocular-brand-Hawke-Binoculars.html - you will see that in general, the tend to do pretty well in this area. I have just looked and in my review of the Hawke Frontier 8x42 ED X www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/Hawke-Frontier-8x42-ED-X-Binoculars-Review-232.htm I noted that they did particularly well in this area and so without being able to compare them side by side (I don't have them with me), I would say that they will be tough to beat. Going back to the older versions, it is really hard to remember and I can only go by what I wrote in the reviews.

@@Bestbinocularsreviews Thank you! The links will be very helpful and thanks for placing them in your reply. When I experienced the color fringe, I honestly thought there was something wrong with my vision. Going back to review your links now. I know I will end up on a life-long quest for the perfect binoculars. :) I’m sure that’s pretty normal when Birdwatching becomes a passion. I had hummingbirds in my yard this summer. A ruby-throated female came really close to my face and then she started feeding from the flowers I was tending to. It was a life changing experience. Again, thank you very much for the helping me out.

@@Bestbinocularsreviews I ordered directly from the Hawke website. They arrived this morning!! Their Indiana headquarters is only 3 hours from where I live...YAY ME. The ED glass makes a huge difference. Two hours of backyard birding and I couldn’t be happier. I think these are perfect for a beginner birder due to the price, quality and no noticeable chromatic distortion (I had to google that term because I’m so new to the world of binoculars and I wanted to sound intelligent....I’m not proud.) I had a few questions, so I called Hawke and the customer service was great. I’m buying the Frontier APO when they become available. I’m overwhelmed with the help and all the information you provide...it’s speaks volumes to your professionalism. Based on your good work, honesty, research and helpfulness, I’d give you a rating of 100% Outstanding in the human category. Take care and thank you.

Wow that was quick - and excellent news and really glad that you like and are happy with your choice - as I found when I tested them, for the price, I really think they are hard to beat. Also many thanks for the kind words - much appreciated. All the best.

Just wanted to let you know I spent a couple hours watching/reading your great stuff today. Sadly the bins you review in this vid are over $400 in Canada, but based on what I learned I think I made an intelligent decision and went with the Meade Rainforest Pro 8 X 42. It was only $135 and I eagerly await its delivery. So thank you and I subscribed to BBR. This is my first set I plan on using for bird watching and general all around use including insects and flowers up close. Without what I learned today I would have bought something less appropriate (bigger is not better).

Excellent review! I went with the Bushnell Legend L(although I'm very satisfied)but wish I could've had a chance to audition these. How do these fair vs the equivalent Vanguard?

If you could have a binocular with ed or dielectric coatings that are both fully multi coated with bak4 and phase corrected, which would you choose? The one with ed or the one with dielectric coatings? The Trailseekers have dielectric coating but no ed. The Vanguard Spirit has ed but silver coatings? Is there really that much noticeable difference. .
@Bestbinocularsreviews

There is no clear cut answer as it also depends on how well the who optical system works together as a unit - but for me I'd usually go for the dielectric coating. I say this because ED glass has become a marketing buzz word, whilst the use of expensive dielectric coatings usually goes unnoticed, but it genuinely adds to the image quality. It also shows that the whole instrument is at a high level.

Best Binocular Reviews thanku for enlightening us with this info. Makes me think maybe I should've gone with the Legend M instead. The open architecture & dielectric coating were the only differences between L & M series but in store I didn't see much of a difference.

Dielectric coatings are a definite improvement on silver coated roof prisms. Remember you wont necessarily notice much of a difference in all situations. It is when you are pushing the device to it's limits, like very poor light conditions (at daybreak, sunset or in dark forests for example) that instruments with higher quality glass and coatings usually rise to the top in my experience.

Thanks for the review! Could you please compare Hawke Endurance ED 8x42 and 10x50 for the poor light conditions and image stability? What will be better: bigger exit pupil of 8x42 or more light capturing by 50mm lenses? I've seen your comparisons of 8x42 with 10x42 and 10x42 with 10x50 and I'm still in doubts. My issue is how much of low light conditions image quality will I "pay" for greater magnification
@Bestbinocularsreviews

Hi, thanks for the question and I agree, a comparison between a 8x42 and a 10x50 of equal quality would make an interesting experiment, especially in low light - which I will do, the next chance I get and get back to you.

Hey, really love your videos and website. They have helped me in learning about binoculars. I am torn between the Hawks Endurance ED 10x42 model compared to the Athlon Midas 10x42 and would love your opinion? You did a great review about the Hawks Endurance model and spoke very highly of it but the Athlon Midas seems to have the dielectric lens coatings that the Hawkes do not. These binoculars would be for general use/wildlife.
@Bestbinocularsreviews

Hi Jordan - yes, I think so, but not 100% sure that the Endurance ED's have silver coatings and not dielectric. This is because they don't highlight that they are dielectric and based on their price and where they sit in the Hawke range. At this price level, the Athlon Midas is tough to equal & almost impossible to beat - as I mention in this article www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/blog/best-athlon-binoculars-for-the-money-02/ I think they are the best value binoculars they produce and was super impressed with the 12x50 version I tested and reviewed: www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/AthlonMidas12x50BinocularsReview-247.htm

Hi Mateus - yes in general the equivalent monocular will use the same optic, so can be a good way to save not only weight and size, but money too! However the downside is a less immersive experience: more info on monoculars here: www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/monoculars/best-monoculars.php
