Funny you put this video up now, I'm just getting swapped over from kicker bales to a Kuhns AF10 setup for the 2023 season. I just bought a used Steffens 5508 so I will have 2 grapples. Mine won't have the rotator but it looks like an awesome option. I have a friend who uses the Steffens system, a 950 accumulator and 5508 grapple, so the same 10 bale tie pack, that really sold me on going to an accumulator setup. The reason I wanted a 5508 is because the Kuhns grapple can only operate loading one direction without using a platform of some kind to load onto. Meaning the pack is always being loaded the same way, the steffens even without the rotator can be unbolted from the arm and turned 90 degrees, this allows you to load a 102" box trailer directly from the rear. The guy I know with one buys older used dry van trailers so uses 96" and 102" wide boxes, so he can just use the same one grapple for both. My plan was to have 2 grapples anyways so one can be off the farm loading in the field and one at home loading into the building, but I really like the idea of having 1 Kuhns and 1 Steffens grapples to have more flexibility. We'll see how it goes for us here but it's funny you put this up as I'm about to do somewhat of the same idea.

I finally got around to finishing watching the whole video. As far as a suggestion to alternative ways to load the van trailers, there is a group on Facebook I'm a part of called Kuhns/Norden accumulator owners or something along those lines. There is a guy on there who runs a few accumulators at once in his operation and has a pretty slick way of loading van trailers that I think I may copy going down the road. He took a shorter, flat deck (no beaver tail) gooseneck trailer and cut the axles off it, then welded in blocks of box steel then reattached the axles to those, essentially like an old school block lift in an old spring over truck, same idea. He raised it up enough so he could back it up to a van trailer or vice versa. He parks a skidsteer on the trailer and builds a stack on the trailer with a tractor and the Kuhns grapple then shoves the pile into the trailer with the skid steer on the trailer. I like the idea of it because it's mobile and can be used in a field off the farm or in the farmyard. Just thought it may be something to think about, I thought it was a great way to do it.

A local hay farmer around here has a 30 ft flat bed truck. Has a 100 horse tractor that lives on the truck back the enclosed trailer up to the flat bed. Chain bumpers together. Build your stack on the flat bed use the 100 horse to shove it in. For a pusher he has a frame built the size of the stack loader hooks up about center of the stack. It works great

also, regarding loading the dry vans- Maybe buy or have a welder fab up a 6-8 foot wide fork frame for your skid steer. Put 4 forks, 6ft long on the frame. Build a stack 6-7 pads high in the barn, pick up the whole stack from the bottom with the skid steer, load into the dry van. I think the bales would have enough weight or friction to back skid away from the pile. (Try a test run, maybe with a couple round bales stacked on end with 2 standard 4ft forks first)

@@farmingforfunandprofit940 Sounds like a nice set up! I’m doing some custom rebelling for a guy, I’m using a hustler unroller and a BC5060 hooked to the Kuhns accumulator. The biggest problem is the unroller it can’t really unroll the core of the bale and it will throw the core into the baler and shear the pin so you have to stop every bale and unroll the core by hand.

To make up your stacks inside, you could make stands to stack them on so you could get telehandler forks under them then lift the stacks with a telehandler, set them as far into the trailer as you can and push them with the next stack. If you can't push multiple stacks you might have to switch from telehandler to skid steer.

@@DLHFarms You would have to build them with open slots where the forks go so the pallet stay when you lift the stack. My 8 bale grab has opposing tines so each bale is grabbed from both sides, works really well if the bales as good. A friend of mine uses regular dry van trailers as storage in NH, so relatively high humidity area. Fills trailers right out of the field with a steffens 5508 grapple. You can't stack right against the roof of the trailer anyways without some kind of platform so he just stacks as many layers as he can and leaves what would be the roof layer out if that makes sense, so that there is an air gap between the top bales and the roof. Then he just parks the trailers off to the edge of the field facing away from whichever way the wind generally comes and leaves the doors open so that the trailers can breath. He doesn't have any issues with it, he sells to a couple hardware stores so he's just swapping out trailers.

Or will you have to pin the 1/2 inch plates to the dock to keep them from sliding away under the loader tracks?

Hi Dennis. I grew up on a small dairy farm near the Idaho Wyoming border. Most everyone in our area have always used auto stacker bale wagons, typically new holland brand to handle collecting and stacking their bales. I have seen on a lot of channels now, most of which are back east, where they use grapples, or sometimes kickers with wagons. I am curious why this is? Are the auto load stacker wagons just a thing we do out west or are they used in your area too? Also what reason would you have not to use an auto stack over the grapple system? To me the auto stack seems way easier and faster, but I’m sure there must be a reason they aren’t as popular on the eastern side of the country. Would love to hear your thoughts on this.
