This was sooooo good. I’m an experienced scriptwriter but have neglected understanding what makes most foreign films work. Mostly because I’m so busy enjoying them. I appreciate your breakdown of the differences between the Japanese narrative and Westernized version. I already peeped game to the U.S. dubbed versions being wildly different than the original and, for that reason, won’t even bother watching any Japanese films with English voiceovers. Thanks for this wonderful insight!

This is so beautiful and I have just discovered, and am loving your essays. You are criminally underrated! But I was not ready for Parasite spoilers!!! (I guess I'll try to take less ridiculous amounts of time to watch things I should watch...)

I'm working on a novel. Well, two. For now. I find that I tend to write with a very cinematic sensibility. And one thing I love is punctuating moments of action with descriptions of tranquility. For example, violence reads so much louder when contrasted with with a description of the silence that comes after. The world goes on, indifferent. In order to push through, to satisfy one's urge to find out what happens next, one must sit with the characters for a while. And in doing so, I feel that one connects with the characters that much more. How the silence and atmosphere is described reflects and contrasts and emphasises a character's inner thoughts, without subjecting the reader to an inner monologue. Show the reader how the characters feel, rather than telling them.

Great analysis! I haven’t heard the 4 part film structure thing before, really well told with your visuals! I fell in love with Ghibli a couple years ago and any analysis video about them is wonderful to see

Great video man, and some really nice editing and transitions. I especially liked the dub comparisons of Kiki's Delivery Service, the English dub really winds me up and I'm not someone typically hostile to English dubs. Sad to see no mention of Porco Rosso - it's my favourite film of all time and I think it utterly exemplifies all of the things that make Miyazaki's process and style so special.

thanks man, appreciate it! sorry about the porco rosso absence, it was really hard to get any footage for miyazaki’s films so I had to limit the amount I could talk about sadly.

@@Essential_Cinema Don't apologise man haha, it's your video and it's great. I'm probably going to talk about Porco Rosso sooner or later so the less you say the better cause my scripts can't stack up against yours.

Apart from how this video is good paced and I generally really enjoyed it: You killed it with the transitions. Like - I dont think I have ever seen a video cut in such a "nitpicky" (positivly) way. Thank you for this great piece of art. :)

What an amazingly edited video. I actually came here wanting to learn more about the "ma" I heard about in an interview with Miyazaki but ended up learning about kishotenketsu as well. Appreciate the thought you put into this one!

you are so right Miyazaki had been my favorite Animator from Japan, his style and visuals, the simplicity and portrayal of country life is what sets him apart, Spirited away made me wanna see more, like my Neighbor Totaro, Ponyo, Howl's moving casle, Porco Rosso, Kiki's Delivery Service, and the wind also Rises. all good films by Stuido Gibli, they are all gems and well worth your time! I did spend 2 years in Japan and his movies perfectly capture the lifestyle and culture of the Japanese, so many of their gardens and Temples have such beauty and elegance to them.

Thank you! I totally love when movies take their time for the visuals, in some modern action flicks it is like: "look at this, now look at this, hey, here the action is, look at this, huhu, look at this", so I appreciate slower films. It is like with my music, I don't really like to get to the point quickly: kzitem.info/news/bejne/tqCttmWgaYeinqA
