I'm so glad the video was helpful. Please let me know if you have any questions on a pool subject. Chances are I've done a video on it and can give you a link to it so you don't have to "search" through a bunch of stuff to get help. And please subscribe so you can keep up to date on my videos as they come out. LASTLY, a word of encouragement: Basic pool service and maintenance is not rocket science (if it was I certainly couldn't do it) so take your time and you will be fine. Then, if you have a major pool issue you'll have the money to hire a licensed, insured and bonded pool repair person to take care of that issue for you. Hang in there

Thank you so much for this video. Today was the day I cleaned my filter cartridges. Interestingly I had 3 different cartridges and only 2 alike. I recently let my pool guy go for a no show 2 weekends in a row. Not cool. I’m not sure he even did my filters in March like he said he was....they were definitely in need of some love. I’ve never been able to maintain my pool on my own, but thanks to your videos I have the confidence to get the job done. As a widow, this is a big deal for me to have done.....I’ve been proud all day, so thank you so very much. I started to panic a little once I saw I had the nut, washer and spring closure for the belly belt....and it was getting hot out already. I had to text a friend to see if the horrible squeak I was hearing was actually okay....turns out it was I will definitely be watching all the wisdom you share with us

Oh and the drain plug was in the tightest spot, I could barely keep turning....but managed. The drain and Belly belt were what I found to be the most challenging....but now that I’ve done it, I have know doubt I can do this again. Oh one last thing, I watched the whole video this morning before attempting this and I made my own video and my system primed itself just the way you showed me, I was thrilled. It’s sometimes the little things that bring us joy, even at the roughest times in our lives. Stay blessed

@@PoolSchooler I think I did - if not I will :) Here is an issue we are currently facing, and would appreciate your feedback. We soaked the cartridge filters in laundry detergent 1:5 and rinsed well (something we should probably have not done but it was recommended and so we tried it in order to clean the algae slimes and grease from the filter pleats) - So it looks like we did not rinse the filters well enough because we now have foamy spa/ pool. Lots of foam! We spent hours skimming the foams - no more mountains of foam but we still have light foam, especially when the spa or the water features are on. What should we do more? How do we get rid foams? Where we live, Algae is one of the main problems with pools due to the high temperatures. Although we use lots of pool chemicals to keep up with the heat and to slow down the constant growing algae, the filters get clogged easily ( the dirt and debris we get from the constant high wind does not help) - Our filters are only 1 year old and we have so far cleaned them 2x . Thank you for reading and any suggestion/feedback you can provide is much appreciated!

@@Astuu1 Unfortunately the foam is from the soap you used. And that soap will remain in the pool. And I think the only way to take care of that would be to change the water (wait til after summer though). Also, NEVER USE DETERGENT OR SOAP to clean your cartridges. For the reason you're experiencing now. Watch this video on algae and algaecides and why I don't use them for info on algae: kzitem.info/news/bejne/rrB91X9qfJZop5g

If your pressure gauge is hard to read due to oxidation on the plastic lens as in this video, you can use a car headlight restoration kit to remove the oxidation and apply the UV protectant in these kits to the lens. It worked great for me, came out good as new, and lasted several years. This method works much better than those people using WD-40.

Thanks for the Vid! I just got a C3030 filter and have to clean it out for the first time. Do you recommend soaking the cartridges in muriatic acid or any other filter cleaner to get them extra clean?
@PoolSchooler
3 жыл бұрын
No. I do not recommend that. If you watched my video, what I do with cartridge filters in in this video is exactly what I do with all of my cartridge filters. Think about it this way, if you so cartridges in muriatic acid that muriatic acid not only dissolves dirt and sediment, but it’s also dissolving part of the fabric and the cartridges. It’s not necessarily a bad thing but it will at the very least dramatically decrease the life of those cartridges. So personally I would say do it the way I show in the video and don’t do a bunch of other stuff and add a bunch of other chemicals into the mix. My philosophy is keep it simple and keep any chemicals to a minimum.

Great video! I have the single cartridge Hayward system and I find that hosing off the filer cleans the outside but not deep in the pleats. What’s your secret to cleaning these areas?
@PoolSchooler
4 жыл бұрын
It's the nozzle I use. It gets pretty deep into the pleats and it's important to note that you really can never get the cartridges as clean as they were when new. But that nozzle gets deep enough to do the job. I got the nozzle at Lowes but you can also find them at Home Depot.

@@dvdmrrs2 I'm familiar with such products and believe they are not necessary. ALSO because they "dissolve" the dirt and build up on on the cartridges there is a very good possibility that they can also speed up the the deterioration of the cartridge fabric themselves, thus shortening their life as well. I've seen some that have used a "solution" and it has more rapidly made the cartridge fabric "pulpy" and far less permeable.

Is there any reason why an Above Ground Pool cannot use an In Ground Filter such as this one? I have a very large AG Pool and need to replace the filter. All the biggest filters are for In Ground Pools.

Hello pool school! I have one question about the basket that is pretty much right next to the filter. When and how should I clean that? I think it’s blue and says “don’t remove under pressure.”

is there some paint or solution we can coat it with after the fiberglass has been exposed?

I can’t be too certain but my guess is… Yes… I would suggest contacting a company in your area that specializes in fiberglass pool and see what the ramifications are and how it can be done.

I just cleaned my Hayward cartridges filters today and they were heavily coated with algea. Is there any special treatment I should have done to make sure all of the algea was removed? I just cleaned them with the water stream you did and they seemed to rinse off the algea ok. I also used a spray on filter cartridges cleaner which seemed to help. Having filter cartridges is there any way to vacuum to waste so that they do not accumulate so much algea when you are dealing with a troublesome algea problem?
@PoolSchooler
4 жыл бұрын
And no matter whether there’s algae on the cartridges or not, I always use the method I show in the video with the nozzle that I use. And I never use any kind of solution or chemical on the cartridges to help clean them, I have found that most of those actually shorten the life of the cartridge fabric. Think of it this way, if the chemicals used in the cleaner help dissolve dirt algae etc. then it’s probably dissolving some of the fabric of the cartridges themselves. The best way to deal with algae is to remove phosphates and keep your chlorine levels up. That along with keeping your filter media clean will keep the Algae away. I did a video on Algae and algicides and why are you don’t need them. I would highly recommend watching it.

@@PoolSchooler I saw your video on algea and algicides and I did the shock treatment and phosphate removal, I hope it worked. My inground pool now have a pebble tec surface which I am having problem controlling the algea are they known to have more algea problems then plaster surfaces?

Whats better? Hayward swimclear c4030 Cartridge filter or a Pentair TR100 sand filter? Have the opportunity to put either in for the same price.

In my opinion both are equally good. I have clients who have both and I've found they both do a good job. So it's really aesthetics at that point.

Make sure your o ring is clean and well lubricated and make sure there’s no cracks or breaks in the O-ring. Then also make sure that the channel on both halves of the filter canister that the O-ring goes into are completely clean, that’s typically where you’ll get a small trickle or leak. And usually that’s why too.

@@PoolSchooler I'm going to stop by lowes and get a can of that silicon spray you used and then remove the filter cover just to make sure everything looks good and see how it goes. I currently have gurgling in the pool since cleaning the filters also. I bleed the air valve and it clears up for about 10 minutes and then back to gurgling.

How often do you lubricate the rim? Is it every time you do a “filter/cartridge cleaning”?

I recommend lubricating it every time you clean the cartridges and if you replace them as well.

My gasket looks good as far as not being frayed or cut and I lubed it very well and I’m still getting leaking what should I do at that point? I’ve tried numerous times to take it apart and put it back together and it still is leaking thank you
@PoolSchooler
2 жыл бұрын
It could be a couple things. Try taking the it apart again and clean the entire channel (both halves of the filter canister) to make sure it's free from any dirt or debris. If that's good and you lubed the gasket make sure the belly band is seated properly and tightened enough (as I describe in the video). If all that is good you may need to replace that gasket (I've had some that looked fine but were a bit flimsy and broken down in just one spot causing a leak. ALSO if you're cartridges and manifold aren't put in correctly that could cause the top half of the filter to not seat well enough and that could cause a leak as well. Try those things and see if one or more of those helps the situation.

Can a clogged & crushed screen cap cause the pressure to read high? I cleaned my filter again a week later and the only thing that was dirty was the screen cap that sits on top of the pipe.

Quick question, when your pool filter is getting dirty or old and your running pressure is high does it have an effect on your pool"cleaner" the kind connected to a hose that scoots around the pool bottom and sides when pump is running?
@PoolSchooler
4 жыл бұрын
ABSOLUTELY. Sounds whether you are talking about a suction side vacuum or a return side vacuum old or dirty filter media will reduce water flow (both suction and return) and reduce the efficiency of your vacuums ability to move around.
@alpulley4894

@@PoolSchooler thanks for your reply! What would be a "normal" reading on the guage with the pump running? I installed the new filters (4) of them. It reads about 10 on the guage when running as opposed to the old filters being around 17 to up to 21 or so if haven't been cleaned recently. Also is this the correct way to think about this subject: High pressure reading on guage means less suction on skimmer or less suction on my robot cleaner side. Low pressure reading on guage means water flow is less restricted thus better suction power on skimmer side/robot cleaner side . Thanks in advance!

@@alpulley4894 With new or newly cleaned cartridges the pressure usually hovers anywhere between 10 - 16 psi with suction and return valves properly opened/adjusted. When the pressure begins to hit anywhere from 24-30psi (and higher) it's probably time to clean them again. ALSO, if after cleaning the cartridges you see the pressure rise in less time (like it only takes a month or two or less for the pressure to go up) it could be an indicator that the cartridges have lived out their life span and it's time for them to be replaced.

You don't add Diatomaceous Earth to a cartridge filter. Only a DE filter. This is a cartridge filter and you NEVER ADD DE TO A CARTRIDGE FILTER.

What do you do if after you remove the cartridges the water doesn’t drain out of the tank?
@PoolSchooler
4 жыл бұрын
kimberj78az you have to remove the drain plug. If you’ve done that and it’s still not draining. Then something’s clogging that opening and you’ll have to clear it out.
