Honestly I don't comment much but wanted to comment on Steward. I've watched boxing since a young man, over 20 years. Boxing is my sport but when Steward died, part of boxing died for me and will never be the same. Thanks Emmanuel, from me, fight fans and the many people who's lives you saved, God bless you.

The BEST commentator. He never got defensive like most ex fighters who become commentators. He knew the sport inside and out. Always cool and collected, well spoken and explained boxing for the viewers. I really miss him as a commentator. He brought credibility without a know-it-all attitude.

One of the Coolest things about damn near every HBO fight with Emanuel on the commentating crew , was the way he often "demonstrated " his IMMENSE knowledge of the ins, outs, ups, downs, left, and rights in boxing. So many fights where he could tell us, sometimes just a minute in to the fight, what was gonna happen, why it was gonna happen, and why fighter B had a snowballs chance in hell of stopping what fighter A was gonna be doing very shortly to secure this fight. Not even a full minute into De La Hoya vs Mayorga , Manny says "Oscar is going to be beating him with short punches all night..." then a few secs later, BOOM, down goes Ricardo Mayorga in the 1st. In a fight in which i cannot remember who the fighters were, but i don't believe it was the Oscar fight, Manny tells us what's gonna be happening shortly and Larry Merchant, sounding semi incredulous says " Whatta ya Mean Manny, the fight JUST started...." and shortly down the road Manny demonstrates his wealth of boxing smarts for the umpteenth time. Also, if you are semi knew as a fan of boxing, do yourself a favor and watch Arturo Gatti vs Mickey Ward 1, and James Toney vs Vassiliy Jirov, because not only was his knowledge near limitless, he was still at heart a huge huge fan of the sport and you can hear how absolutely genuine his love for boxing was when you get into the later rounds of those fights. "He better do a Julio Cesar and run across the ring!!!!!" Seriously, if you cant watch all of the Toney fight, you HAVE to at least, at some time, watch the 12th round. kzitem.info/news/bejne/xYWnvYSli2lnoH4

That advice he gave Lewis in the corner is why I love Manny. As a trainer, you have to be able to adjust, envision, and feel the intensity of the fight. Can you imagine if Roy had signed with him? That would've been an all time great pairing that rivals Arcel-Leonard/Duran and Cus/Tyson. We've lost one of the truest teachers of the sweet science that we'll ever witness.
@wreckim

He showed the difference between just having boxing knowledge and having the talent to sense what to do next....the advice he gave Lewis, as you state, about taking the fight to his opponent, and stop trying to 'time' it...that was immediately the key for Lewis. Lewis without Steward would have changed the history of the HW division in the 90s. and beyond.

I remember when Emmanuel lost his mind when Lewis fought Tyson. Emmanuel knew Tyson was finished but was smart enough to recognize that Tyson was still dangerous due to his massive punching power. He kept telling Lewis this through out the fight before Lewis finally dropped Tyson. I miss Emmanuel on commentary.

One of the greatest trainers in boxing history. Emanuel Steward was a legend and one of the good guys in boxing who actually CARED about the sport. With sharks like Don Kong and Bob Arum still around, it's a shame that a guy like Manny had to leave us at the age of 68. RIP Manny. You were a great trainer and an even greater man.

I just loved Manny on commentary. Has a very distinct style, a nice timbre of voice, very knowledgeable and articulate but with an edge of street to him. Who can forget the Gatti/Ward "Oh! Look at that! Look at that combination!" Or him in Lennox Lewis corner imploring him to knock him out "He's gonna catch you with some shit, man!" And in the end, what a fitting name. Emanuel meaning "God With Us" and Steward which means sort of "caretaker/shepherd/guide". He truly was a great "steward" for many boxers and the sport of boxing!

Good-evening Mr Stewart. What, can I say. My name is Kid Blackie The Non-Pareil. I, have much love and respect for you. IF, just a particle of your greatness would drop upon me, I could achieve great heights and become Middleweight Champion of the World. We, are a scattered and troubled people, but when we return to Africa life will be much better. I, need to do 1000 press ups per train. And need to lift TEN cars per day. But, most of all, I need your support and backing. Thank You. Kid

hes a trainer who moulds a boxer not like angelo Dundee his fighters are natural leonard, ali all would have been great regardless of their trainers... but Tyson had severe crippling inner demons as a teenage ... D'Amato made him believe and showed him the only way a fighter like Tyson could have been so great in the heavyweight division ... D'Amato differs from angelo Dundee, many steward because none of his fighters would have been great without him Tyson, Patterson, torres etc. they all depended on the way d 'amato taught them and D'Amato on top of that invented the most sound form of defence ever introduced to boxing which is of course the peekaboo style
