The Chevron Refinery in El Segundo, which houses an array of tracks, spurs, and yards within the property, has been switched out by railroad contractors for over two decades, most recently by a company called Savage, working the plant since 2008. The railroad assigned a 2GS14B Genset (SVGX 8625) and a GP9R (SVGX 8610) to work the plant and transfer cars from the refinery to the storage yards owned by both BNSF and Union Pacific respectively. Chevron is a longtime customer of both Class Is, with BNSF serving it via the 1st Watson (Y-WAT1011) from Watson Yard in Wilmington, and UP serving it via the El Segundo Local (LOW20) from 4th Street Yard in Downtown LA. In December 2023, the contract with Savage expired, and the lowest bidder for the new contract was Genessee and Wyoming Inc. - an international shortline holding and terminal switcher company. The G&W sent an RP20BD Genset (CIND 2002), a GP38-2 (DGNO 3556), and an SW1500 (RLIX 1500) to the Chevron Refinery for the terminal switching operations, and a few days later the Savage engines were sent out. The G&W operation in El Segundo has no name as it is technically not its own railroad, but rather part of their Rail Link switching contract service. In this video, we chase the Chevron switch job as it moves cars in and out of the refinery property to the BNSF and UP interchange yards, with various shots, locations and angles to demonstrate the scale of this operation. Shots taken from April to September 2024. Thanks for watching!
