I largely agree with you on this topic, mostly because the title of each classification is pretty darn clear by itself, it's just corporate buffoonery that makes it confusing. HD Port: Literally in the name, it's a direct port of a game presented in high definition. The only changes to the game code that should be made are to allow it to run in widescreen and at 1080p or higher resolution. Remaster: Again, literally in the name, it's taking an old game and giving it a new set of master graphics while keeping the gameplay unchanged. Updated textures, sounds, dialogue and models are allowed, but no changes to the mechanics, story or other core aspects of the gameplay loop are allowed except where absolutely necessary when the updated graphics conflict with the original source code, but the majority of the source code should remain unchanged. Remake: I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but it's once again literally in the name. This time, though, the definition is "to make again", so more drastic changes are allowed - new source code, brand new assets, new gameplay elements, changes to characters and stories are okay, and so on. So long as the remade game sticks somewhat close to the spirit and basic gameplay of the original, you're golden. Most of the Resident Evil remakes fall comfortably into this category, as do the Spyro and Crash Bandicoot remakes - they hit most of the same major story beats as their inspirations, don't drastically change the characters or locations, but aren't afraid to do some things a little different. Reboot: Nothing is off limits here. Doom 2016 is the crown jewel of game reboots (well, it was until The Elder Gods retconned that whole game but let's just ignore that for the time being) and New Super Mario Bros. is also a great example. So long as the basic themes and titles are preserved, you can do whatever you want with a reboot - new stories, new characters, make any changes to legacy characters, use completely different graphics, mechanics, gameplay styles, it's no holds barred here (for better or worse). Not every change will be successful or welcome by long time fans, and straying too far from the spirit of the original comes with very high risks of alienating your core audience, but when done right, a reboot can reinvigorate a dead or dying franchise and give it new life for years and even revive entire genres - i.e. Doom 2016 reviving interest in arcade arena shooters. The secret to a successful reboot is to have a team of people who know the IP inside and out and have a deep, undying passion for the genre as a whole as they are the best equipped to know what would and wouldn't work in that IP/genre and can implement the good ideas in ways that benefit the game.

I've always felt like HD & Remasters should be discounted, unless you're getting a bunch of titles like a collection. I think the Remakes/Reboots can be sold at a Full Retail because they're essentially building a whole new game. Something like Stubbs the Zombie for $15 is EXACTLY what I'm looking for in an HD/Remaster . I'll take a SHIT LOAD of older titles with clean looking jaggies/pixels; I just wanna play my favorite older games without breaking out the Red, Yellow, & White cables y'know 😅 Great video, you're killing it with this format and I can't wait to see what else you've got cooking.

But then you started doing Region Break with new Nintendo content, which reeled me back in. I'm starting to understand why your channel name is "Shesez" and not just Boundary Break--you didn't want to tie yourself to just doing one kind of content, and I think that's great. Thank you! It's frustrating and infuriating to see how the very same industries that have created these terms misuse them. Sequel, prequel, revival, remake, reboot, reimagining, revamp, remaster are concepts that are not being used neither consistently nor logically by storytellers. There's a Disney+ show named 'Reboot', but it actually depicts a revival/reunion! It's very confusing and I don't know what to expect from these labels anymore.

in my opinion a HD port is a remaster, remaster just means the original game has been improved, doesn't matter if they included higher res textures or not (or just offer a higher resolution). usually not many games are just called "HD", it's just a remaster named differently. on the other hand Diablo 2 Resurrection is also a remaster since they are using the original game code and added a 3d engine on top with the proper assets (which is pure insanity btw) a remake is a game that was made from the ground up in a different engine, it can be the same game 1:1 (Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy) or a reimagination like Resident Evil 2 and 3 the point where it gets really confusing is the GTA Trilogy. they used the original game code + assets and translated it for the unreal engine, so it's kind of a remake but with the original files. but yes I agree, proper term for these things are needed. this would be ideal imo: "HD" if they just offered a higher resolution, "remaster" if it's the original game with a higher resolution + higher quality assets (3d models, textures) maybe gameplay improvements/quality of life changes, "reimagine" for something like Resident Evil 2 an d "remake" if it's a 1:1 remake in a different engine. when it comes to something like GTA the Trilogy and Diablo 2 Resurrection, well then I don't know if any term is fitting.

My definitions, remake: an old game remade from the ground up. Remaster: using the same code to make the game better. Reimagining: remaking a game with the same story but made in a different way than the game was originally released (such as a 2D into 3D). Reboot: taking an old game, remade, rereleased made to launch the series in a new light of players or to make new games for that series. Port: to use the exact same code of an old game and put it on a newer console for the current fan base to enjoy. I also dont like current modern naming of this scheme. But these are what I define these words as.

Wow I can't believe how much do I agree with everything you said. Finally somebody makes sense. I usually compare the remasters and remakes with what some musicians do. When they release a remastered album, they just grab the original recordings and tweak the mixing and mastering (hence the name remaster), maybe adding a little new sound here and there, but they don't record anything new. On the contrary if they were to record the whole song from scratch, that would be a remake.

I would assume the proper terms would be "Arrangement" and "Remix"... right?
@nattzero5315

@@lugbzurg8987 Maybe, but I guess music isn't a good example either when naming stuff, bands release remastered albums all the time, as I mentioned, but then a remix would be more like a re imagining of the song, usually made by another artist. And then there are "Arranged" or "Remastered" versions of old video games soundtracks that are more like remixes or re-recordings, or are played with real instruments instead of synths.

Here's the way I've always seen it; Original: This is the game as it was first released. This includes the release version, and any update patches for it that have released since. Can be re-released later as is via a port or through emulation. Examples: NieR Replicant/Gestalt (2010), Crash Bandicoot (1996) Remaster: This is in essence the same game running on the same original source code as a base, but is a later release sold separately that can include improved visuals, sound design, and various changes/improvements to the experience as well as new content. Examples: NieR Replicant (2021), Devil May Cry HD Collection (2018) Remake: This is in essence a new game with an original source code but made to simulate the experience of an older title with the intention of being a better way to play the game. Improved visuals are not mandatory, but are common. Examples: Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy (2017), Sonic Origins (2022) Reimagining: This is in essence a completely new game directly inspired by an older title, but made entirely under the mindset of making the game as if for the first time with advancements in technology since the original's release. Example: Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) Reboot: This is a completely new game directly inspired by an older title, but also intentionally taking a very different approach to the interpretations of the characters, lore, setting, etc. to tell an original/alternative story. Example: The Legend of Spyro: A Hero's Tale (2006)

To add to the confusing nature of this, sometimes there's games that get remade from scratch but are advertised as ports. My favorite example of this being the 2011 version of Sonic CD which runs in a completely different engine from the original release but still uses the original assets, so depending on which platform/collection/release you're playing of the game the underlying code could be completely different. It's even weirder in Sonic Origins since the games are running in the Retro Engine being rendered inside a window within the Hedgehog Engine v2.

Thank you for addressing this and covering all the bases. I would bring this up a lot regarding RE because you have examples of all of these terms and there's always confusion. Basically agree with everything said, and I think _most_ people would as well. Just wish companies would as well. What's really funny, is that Nintendo has kind of fallen into its own category with "DELUXE." ---You've got Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story on the 3DS, which are both remakes-- in Japan, their name is "Mario & Luigi RPG1 DX" and "-RPG3 DX." In English they just added the name of the side mode. ---Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a port. It has new content, but nothing was remastered or remade. It's the same game with new content. Same with Pikmin 3 Deluxe. ---Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe seems to be a remaster, I'm pretty sure? I'm assuming it uses the exact same code as the original, but either way, it's the exact same game with just updated models, textures, and some animations and stuff. Although there is the brand new content with Merry Magoland and Magolor's side mode. Through writing this, I guess I've realized that it doesn't matter whether it's a port, remake, or remaster. If it has "DELUXE" in the title, then it has some form of new content. A new mode, extra story, etc. If that's the case, then Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury is technically a "Deluxe" game.

so to sum up. a HD port, or HD version is just the original running at a higher resolution, and with certain elements upscaled to look ok on a modern screen. perhaps some textures and assets are improved to improve readability on a modern display. a remaster is similar to a hd port but with new updated graphical elements (models, textures, effects etc) are used as well as higher resolution output but is essentially the old game under the hood. a remake is an all-new game that tries to immitate the original as closely as possible keeping "almost" everything the same but made on new code. a reboot is a reimagining of a game, using new tech to completely remake a game, set in the same world, with the same characters and largely the same plot. But with none of the original games code or assets. A reboot is a chance to rewrite the story and change the lore of a series.

Yeah, we need to more firmly define these things - I recently had a large argument with people about the Dead Space remake, because I said it should probably be called something else (like a remix maybe?) if we consider the new re2 and re3 remakes - those two are completely different from the originals, whilst Dead Space stays very close to its original. My differentiation of the terms is based on the how close the new game sticks to the original and it's design brief, rather than whether or not anything is actually made from scratch. So I think on the marketing and titling terms, we need to come to a consensus so we can know what to expect from a product.
@SorcererLance

I guess a comprehensive way to showcase the differences could be listing familiar Nintendo games; HD Port (upscaled and largely untouched): Super Mario 3D All-Stars Remaster (same game, new coat of paint, sometimes new extras/improvements tossed in): Zelda Link's Awakening DX, Super Mario All-Stars, Metroid Prime Remastered, Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D, Zelda Majora's Mask 3D, Starfox 64 3D, Zelda Wind Waker HD, Zelda Twilight Princess HD, Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition Remake (past game recreated, improved, and revamped from the ground-up): Metroid Zero Mission, Mario 64 DS, Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green, Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver, Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, Zelda Link's Awakening for Switch Reboot (same story starting over with new/remixed set pieces and gimmicks, newer/better graphics optional): Starfox 64 and again with Starfox Zero Though with coming up with this list, I'm left wondering... What would categorize the Donkey Kong Country trilogy on the GBA? It's not a one-to-one port, the visuals weren't improved except the maps, it's got extra minigames and unlockables added that didn't exist before... and it's not exactly a "downgraded port" like the Donkey Kong Land games on the GB.

HD Port - Same game but now in better resolution Enhanced Port - Same game but has improvements Remaster - A new version of a old game running on original source code/engine. I would argue that, while the initial marketing intended you to believe ff7Remake was a remake, once the game released they started making it clear that the "remake" is actually a subtitle. It's like "A realm reborn" or "the war of the lions." It's final fantasy 7 (*subtitle:*) remake. I think they were trying to be clever about the story twist with that subtitle and just ended up tricking everyone into thinking it would be a literal remake, then had to roll with it or else they'd spoil it.

As someone who previously worked in manufacturing: LANGUAGE REALLY MATTERS WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU'RE BUILDING. I work in data analytics now, but... you don't need to be a data analyst to recognize the pattern of obfuscation around "remake naming conventions." The obfuscation is essentially designed to defer criticism while leaving room for developer praise (if there are parts players like). The cowardice & lack of clarity is just another sign that many working in game development are more "presentation" than they are "substance." It sucks because I've got friends that are really passionate developers, and the language used often in the AAA space gives developers a bad reputation. The whole AAA industry also just really gives developers a bad reputation based on everything they do (and don't do) I mean, imagine if you had to go to the Ubisoft sexual assualt factory to buy their latest unoriginal game! They'd probably sell a lot fewer copies when their dirty laundry is so front and center. Same logic applies to "remakes/remasters/reimaginings" The less clear you are about your intentions, the less clear your work is for criticism. Every missed opportunity to improve something can just be called "a faithful re-creation" rather than a failure to fix the old outdated system/mechanic that never actually worked as intended. And vice versa for the "original purists" that somehow think including a bad original design is good for some reason. Great work on putting this video together. Maybe one or two devs will see this and recognize that their high school level bullsh*t language manipulation can't cover their asses forever.
@artsyomni

I tend to agree with your classifications here. I think if literally everything in the game, including how it's programmed, is new, it should be called a remake. Crash and Spyro? Remakes. FF7R? I think "reimagining" would be a worthwhile descriptor if the game also didn't veer in terms of story. I wouldn't call it a "reboot," because I think that term has connotations about narrative continuity. I think the line between HD Port and Remaster can certainly be pretty blurry. Particularly because the term "remaster" is borrowed from the audio and video industries, where you're taking an existing recording of some kind and just running processes on it to make marginal improvements, like changing EQ, adjusting volume levels on music stems, adjusting color balance on old video, etc. I can see an argument for a remaster simply being synonymous with an "enhanced port." Like, let's compare Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD. Wind Waker HD uses mostly the same source texture files as the original game, just exported at a higher resolution. But every texture is technically updated, even if the content of those textures is the same. Does that qualify as a remaster? Maybe, maybe not. Whereas, with Twilight Princess, many of the textures are just completely different, likely because the methods used to create the older textures (often photobashing was used for more realistic graphics at the time) didn't really lend themselves to just being exported at a higher resolution. But all of the models are the same, and it runs the same underlying code, so to me, if Wind Waker HD doesn't qualify as a remaster, then Twilight Princess maybe just barely does. But if we're more liberal with our use of "remaster," I think both WWHD and TPHD can fall under that umbrella.

I feel everyone wanted to make this video lol. You basically captured my thoughts on the matter. I do hate the term "remaster" because its just some music term that game companies use because it is marketable that isnt very applicable to games. To me, there is: emulated port, straight port, enhanced port, remake, and then reimagining. And to me, even if something uses original source code, if it is different enough from the original game, i would classify it as a remake. I consider the ps4 shadow of the colossus to be a remake, the same way i consider the monkey island special editions to be remakes even though they run off scumm and you can switch between visuals on the fly. Maybe this isn't as simple as what youre proposing. Ah well. I do think there must be some market research that proves that using "remake" in a title is bad for sales. Also i hate being called a consumer lol. I'm just a customer.

hell, Dead Rising got a great remaster that was literally just marketed as a port, even getting released as a budget title despite running at a smooth 60fps. Seems like there's never any consistency in marketing

The sad truth is that "remaster" is just more marketable than "remake" It's probably more efficient to have them mention "remake" in advertising and on the back of the box, rather than as the title.

Gravity Rush Remastered... Remaster! Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut (not even from the same director)... Remaster! Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter & Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter... Remake! Ratchet & Clank (2016)... Reimagining! Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary... Remaster! Oddly enough, I actually went into this video under the assumption that "HD Port" and "Remaster" were the same thing, but you present a good counter-argument. It doesn't help that I see the term "HD Remaster" from time to time, muddying things up more.

HD port is Twilight Princess HD, exact same game just sharper. Remaster is like Windwaker HD were massive changes are done to for example textures or lighting. A Remake is like Prime Remaster or Bionic Commando Rearmed where the exact same game is copied but with current day power so it looks like a vastly new game A Reimagining is FF VII Remake or RE 4 were it's just a completely different game when it comes to even the mechanics or level design.

I think the reason why they choose to market their remakes as being "remastered" is because I feel like the term "remastered" sounds more, for lack of a better word, fancier. "Remake" on the other hand sounds like you're getting something that could be perceived as completely different from the original, which could potentially turn off some people. Also, you should totally do more video essay content. Didn't even know you had another channel until I saw this video in my recommended.

Actually, Spider-Man remastered is a full-blown remake in the Miles Morales engine. It'd be like if Doom 2016 launched on the PS5 using the Doom eternal engine. It looks like a remaster, and arguably since the only thing it really adds is ray tracing you could call it that, but to add the ray tracing required completely remaking the game in the miles Morales engine. So from an uninformed outsider, it looks like just the next gym port that adds nothing but retracing, when in reality it's a full-on remake.

As a computer science graduate, it's a pet peeve of mine when people say a game is made "from scratch". I'm sure you don't mean it literally, but no game is made from scratch. All software is made up from many smaller parts that are plugged in together, and new parts are only made where necessary to accomplish the desired product. To say a game is made from scratch implies the devs wasted a TON of time reinventing the wheel on every detail of the game's engine from how graphic are displayed on the screen to how audio is protected. It sounds like it would create a high-quality product, but it's actually just the opposite as it not only would waste a ton of money, but you also don't get the assurance of using familiar code, so tge end result will inherently be far more bugged than if you just used parts that are tried and true. I'd say it's better to differentiate between a remaster and remake by how much is added or changed from the original. A remaster is focused on being as true to the original as possible while updating the overall quality while a remake actively attempts to improve an old game for a modern audience.

I thought it would be addressed properly because of the thumbnail, but RE2 to RE4 "Remakes" are not remakes. They're Re-imaginings. They take the core ideas of the original and make a new game out of it, but it has enough of the original game's DNA to not stray away and be a reboot.

Thank you for this essay. I hoped you would talk about God of War 2018. Since everyone is calling it a reboot. And in a gameplay point of view, i would tend to agree. But not in story. It is a sequel. In my opinion, to call something a reboot : story prevails over gameplay, to determine that. So I'm very interested to hear your opinion, on what determines a reboot, in another video. Keep up the good work !

Interesting how you didn't mention what I consider to be the first great remake, and it's a 4-in-1! Now, I'm not all there when it comes to coding, so I didn't look at it myself, but I do recall Nintendo mentioning that they did alter the physics for Super Mario All Stars. Then there's the audio and visual overhaul. They added a save system for all four games, and SMB3 even lets you carry over all your items to a second playthrough (originally, you would just get all four rows of P-Wings). Too bad I didn't know about this channel sooner...

I get more annoyed from folks claiming that emulated rereleases are ports instead of emulation what a port means to me is taking a game from one peice of hardware and translating it to another emulation while on paper achieves the same thing, the main difference is that it's not natively running on the target hardware and I feel like being more transparent as to what an actual port is and what uses emulation would clear a lot of confusion for future rereleases there are still people who claim that the NSO game releases are ports when it's been emulation since day 1

I think "remake" implies more user-visible changes to how the game is played. I would classify N'Sane as a remaster, because the source code isn't what matters. They sought to preserve the original experience with better graphics: that makes it a remaster.

I disagree with the HD Port portion. to me a "Port" is simply the same game with no changes. in the video you bring up that something like Skyward Sword HD is a "port" because its just the same game with higher resolution. If upscaling is the only thing thats required to make a game an "HD Port" then that means Skyward Sword HD is the same as the games on NSO which is far from the case. the games on NSO are all upscaled and play at 1080 but theres still a massive visual quality upgrade from those and skyward sword. HD Port - same game with no changes Remaster - Higher res, Higher framerate and sometimes better textures Remake - Remaking everything from scratch

I don't quite agree here, I understand how a game enthusiast would probably consider the reuse of code as a factor in classifying a game as a HD/Remaster/Remake, but to the average consumer? that just ain't worth a damn, as it is not something they can actully see and, generally, even feel. Even with your example of the Crash N.Sane Trilogy, a game with the new code can remain much identical to the original game. All this to say i rather use the factors an average player can see and/or feel to classify a game as a Remaster/remake/Re-imagening: So i personally classify it as: Remaster - As the word implies, you're not building anything substancially new, Your "polishing" what is already there. you might remix some of the Soundtrack and touch up the textures, but the skeleton of the game is clearly the same as the original. I personally include simple HD Upscales as Remasters as well. Maybe add some quality of life improvments to the old game loops; Remake - We are now clearly throwing away the game's original Skeleton (the one your eyes percieve at least), every game model has no connection to the original, other than serving as inspiration for the new design, as they are built from scratch, with polygon counts and special effects clearly going beyond what the original hardware allowed. Soundtrack usually ain't simply remixed, but re-recorded, with again the orignal track serving as inspiration for the new one. this might be where people loose me on the term... but i don't think a Remake needs a complete overhaul to it's gameplay, to be classified as a remake, because when you do you start to enter in another type of territory that will affect many facets of the game...; Re-imagining - You're basicly modernising every facet of the game, from visuals to the very game design, to achieve the same creative goal you had when you developed the original all those years ago, but with modern audiences and sensibilities in mind. If you start messing with various gameplay elements from the original where your remake "just feels and plays" like a diferent game, i feel like we just entered into Re-imagining territory... Most clear example i can think of is Resident Evil 2 and 3 remake when compared to resident evil 1 GC remake. Just the new camera alone makes one have to rethink most parts of the game flow, to retain the basic creative vision that the orignal entry tried to achieve. Reboot - I honestly feel like almost anything goes when developing a reboot. as it is usally a clear "fresh start" that might borrow some of the names and concepts of the previous entries. but other than that as no meaningfull ties to previous entries

Really cool video, we really need companies to decide on a standard for these. The biggest offender for me is FF7 remake, that made me so mad, not only it is a weird sequel, so it will confuse new players, but it is a totally different type of gameplay. Hate it
