Whilst old rolling stock is often of high quality, even that doesn't last well without care and intervention. Everywhere, including Switzerland, we've lost countless pieces of rolling stock that really didn't have to go yet in their time. Even absolutely marvelous steam ships were scrapped, and if it hadn't been for people fighting tooth and nail, all our lakes today would be serviced by these absolutely bland, boring hunks of ... whatever they're made of, ferry-like looking eyesores. So, every time you see a well preserved steam locomotive, or any other kind of "ancient" mass transport vehicle, in a first world country, don't just think of the ones that built it - also think of the tough-weathered preservation veterans who moved heaven and earth to keep it alive after its transportation company dropped it like a hot potato.

It does sound like a American steamer. The drive gear looks European. The Belpaire firebox was invented in Europe but the only US railroad to make high use of it was the PRR. My guss is they used some American design in the design of this class of locomotive. The whistle tho sounds very American lol. Most European steamers have screeching whistles that hurt my ears lol
@Ptitgars66

Well... This is a North America company which designed that beauty ! It was already in service in the USA way before it came to France. The only things they had to do is to redesign it a bit for the French specifications ! And that's why it sounds so familiar to you lol
@308RoadReady

Jordi Bertrán-Cautres why doesn't that surprise me lol. US design has always become the standard after some foreign design changes lol. Same is seen today with the OHV internal combustion engine lol

+HotRod Buick The engine was built either in USA (first series) or in Canada (late series, mostly fuel heated) and shipped to France to help the reconstruction of the french railway network that was devasted post WWII. The design is based on a US light engine, re-engineered by US and french technicians. It has been one of the most sucessful steam loc. running on the SNCF network.
