Today was the October Running day and re-opening for The Swansea Bus Museum. The Museum has been closed since June 1st for refurbishment, and now has a new public entrance, with an office, restroom for staff and a toilet located adjacent to it.
The first few photographs are taken of the new arrangements, and one clip of The Museum filmed from the top deck of 500 WNO 484. New vehicles to the Museum this year are : a 1950 AEC Regent III with Saunders body, RT1396 KXW 495. Also a very rare 1987 Leyland DAB Lion with Alexander body, LDTL11/1R D160 UGA. The RT was used on several trips today and proved to be very popular with the enthusiasts.
The main footage is taken on 1967 AEC Regent V 639, GWN 867E, owned by Allan Woolcock, who has done a superb job of restoring this bus to it's original condition as new. I have filmed the trip of 639 on the 11.35 service 14 to Pennard as i didn't get the chance to drive today. The footage starts at Blackpill and shows Bob Nicholas driving, right through to Pennard. I have concentrated on the sound of the gearbox...which is so melodic and so iconic to AEC's, the hills on the route are ideal for this purpose !! The weather was a bit inclement at times during the day....very mild but with strong winds and squally showers....we certainly felt it at Pennard Cliffs...i heard the same was to be found on the 77 route to Limeslade !!
The Museum staff did a brilliant job of organising The Running Day, and are to be congratulated on their efforts. Looking forward now to the next major event on 17th/18th May 2014 , which is the Centenary of South Wales Transport. That should be a cracker !! ** Sorry if the video is a bit 'wobbly' on 639, but it was all taken hand-held whilst stood on the platform ; as sitting down wasn't an option. I think the view forward was far better near the bonnet !!
Filmed on a Panasonic HC X800.
