Ed Dickens has said that the Challenger will run again, it just needs a good rebuilding. The 844 took them about a year once it was really hit hard, so the Challenger probably will take more than that since it's an articulated. My guess is about 2021 or 22. I hope they come to Arkansas.

AMESOME VIDEO. I never had the chance to see Steam giants in person how ever this video Made me feel like I was right there train side. Great Cameraman work. True! That said, I think that most of our trains are also faster. Even provincial commuter trains will get up to 80/90 once they get out of the cities, and the thought of a cow or a deer mooching onto the line in front of an Inter City Train doing its design speed of 140 mph doesn't bear thinking about!

If they are going to team diesel locomotive with either of these heritage steam locomotives i wish that they would put UP 6936 in with them.
@308RoadReady
11 жыл бұрын
they actually have 5 steamers on their roster. 838 (parts for 844), 844, 5511 (last of its kind a T1), 3985, and 4014 (UP already owns him) Only 844, 3985, and 4014 will be operable. 838 has been a donor since retirement and 5511 is a drag engine (low speed high tractive force helper). For the next project I would vote for either the turbine in Utah or #9000 as it is the height of non articulated design. They actually outperformed most articulated locos on the UP til the 4-6-6-4s came around.
@davidng2336

5511 is finally being sent somewhere to be restored. Also, 3985 is about to get another chance when it gets sent to the same place 5511 is going. 9000 will unfortunately never be brought back as the tracks today can’t handle the long frame, and also because of the third cylinder making maintenance horrible.

@rpgmurphy
10 жыл бұрын
Both normally run with a diesel in tow, and is controlled by the engineer of the steamer. The only thing they use the diesel for is dynamic braking. But running mainlines, it is also available in case of breakdown to avoid blocking trains that will be along all too soon. They occasionally get permission to run without one but it isn't often. In this case, I suspect 844 was acting as backup for 3985 :-) (About 15 yrs. ago, 844 pushed a stalled diesel freighter up Archer Hill!)
