The Price Roadblock into HDR is huge for a lot of creators, and although this isn't a way to master color critical HDR Content, it's an awesome way to learn HDR Grading, and produce non color critical content where again the accuracy isn't that important. $500 vs $6000 displays? Also remember that the timeline color space settings need to match the Atomos HDR Settings :)

Thanks a million for doing this! I recently saw a post on the BM Forum that was created in 2016 on this very subject, and no one was knowledgeable enough to make it work! You made this easy to comprehend with "very little pre-prep required" re: terminology. I did have to watch 3 times to absorb totally, but I'm all in now. Looking forward to checking out more of your videos for useful tips on getting better. Thanks again!

Awesome explanation! I am new to all of this and found this to be perfect. I just picked up a ninja v because of you. I am using HLG 2100 with my mini 4 Pro, and I can't wait to get this started. Thank you very much for this extremely useful information 😊

I use imac 2019 without HDR function, can i just buy a hdr monitor (eg: Asus pa32 ucx) to do the HDR workflow?

I wonder if that workflow is applicable to BM’s videoassist 12g hdr monitors as they burst over 2k nits.

As long as you can set the input color space, gamma and gamut, it should work.

Well done for the great tutorial, I went ahead and bought a Shinobi II monitor and tried color grading BMCR Raw footage in Rec 2020 as described. I managed to grade for HDR and SDR separately using Dolby Vision and HDR10 as mentioned depending on the monitor used. However I wanted to ask if there are any particular settings needed to be set in Develop as the output seems blown out. I have enabled Main10 (10 Bit), H265 and tested same gamma noted in the timeline however the result is very different than view as seen in the workflow (output is blown out too much (note Tonemapping is off, as many including myself sometimes forget to run it off prior to start render). Any suggestions?

Fabulous video, Sidney. I want to experiment with my NINJA V using DaVinci resolve 18.0 (now in October 2022)on my Desktop MAC Mini M1 chip. When connected to HDMI out the monitor displays "No Input" so I cannot access clean feed from DaVinci. However, the Ninja V is detected on my old 17 inchMacBook Pro 2009 during start-up. How can I detect the Ninja V as a second monitor on Mac Mini?

blackmagic support claims you can only get hdr output in davinci resolve using a decklink card. they claim windows doesn't support hdr output. are they wrong?
@sidneybakergreen

Windows can support HDR. However, it's with a color profile attached from windows. Which is why you need a decklink card. The same holds true for mac. I would always use a decklink to make sure you're getting clean HDMI Out! :)

@@sidneybakergreen looked at the windows api and apps can provide their own color profiles completely overriding the OS for any hdr colorspace or transforms they desire. some apps like potplayer for windows use this for hdr playback.
