31:13 There's the other one! They don't seem to be associated with the signals in any coherent manner, so I disagree with other comments suggesting it is an old type of balise. They're also much too rarely installed for that. Rather, I suspect they are reference markers for track & structure geometry recording trains, so that they have a precise registration of the recording to the physical track.

In other words (plain English) _"survey markers"_ for Dutch railways? It seems there isn't that many of them today? Wonder why?
@Kromaatikse
8 ай бұрын
@@jonathonshanecrawford1840 For this purpose, not many are needed. The train itself has an accurate measurement of distance travelled (not least because the sensors on board can count individual rail joints and sleepers as they go past), and the route it takes is known. There only needs to be one or two such reference markers along the entire route of recording, which may be literally hundreds of miles, to properly "register" the data to the physical track - and they do not need to be at the beginning of the recording. It's possible that the method is transitioning to using a GPS position taken while at a stand as the reference. This can be of similar accuracy to a physical reference marker, provided the GPS constellation is in good order (which it usually is).

@@Kromaatikse Thank you, I believe the idea of the balise has been employed by the railways for over 40 years. Like in Sydney _Australia_ they basically knew where the urban trains were _(1980's)!_ Of course GPS train tracking, does make a difference, except when the train goes through tunnels or in a subway of course! Considering there are hundreds of Kilometres of railway track, to insert _"markers"_ would be silly because of the the cost, I guess?
@EngelsNederfiele

The item you showed us falls under the category of balise, some are electrically active and some are just passive (magnetic distance markers and used less often as trains rely more on digital integrated systems.) Most balise on the British railway network are located between the rails, where throughout many European countries they are located at side of tracks.

You are not alone. In Holland, the quality of many tracks is such that driving on them at a speed of 140 km/h is like plowing a golf course in a 6 liter Jeep. The driver Stefan tried to explain to me why this is so, citing this paradox by the fact that 90% of Holland lies below sea level, and at high speed (150-180km/h) the train can fly into space, but this is an excuse well like that😅

I walked down from Naarden (the old City) a couple of months ago when I was on holiday. In doing so I saw several of the level crossings. One, as a foreigner I noted just how many there were and how often the barriers were coming down for trains. Sometimes the barriers seemed only up for a minute of two before they started to close again. Nothing wrong with it of course and just an example of how well trains are part of the scenery in the Netherlands. Enjoy your videos. Coming up to my third vacation to the Netherlands in less than a year. I enjoy trains but most of all I appreciate the integrated public transport of the Netherlands and its reliability. In the end much of Holland between Amsterdam and Rotterdam is like one city. If only more tourists would get out of Amsterdam and find out, that by using the trains and buses, you can explore the country from just about anywhere. My next trip starts in Den Haag and then goes northwards over a set of days to Alkmaar, with a diversion along the way to the lovely town of Weesp.

The on-screen info you provide about the train does leave me with some questions. E.g. the large odometer differences between 3015 and 3018, both introduced at the same time. I suppose for this all-stations stopping service a low average speed is to be expected, esp when there are long wait times at some stations. Should the conductor not have done the radio test at Vathorst instead of wating until Centraal? As for the faulty train the lowered pantograph would indicate an electrical problem. Does the platform of track 1 at Baarn get used for anything? I've looked at some random dates in the NS archives but nothing shows up. That final piece of data - 1.2kW/km/unit seems to be the norm for all the rolling stock. Funny that, almost as though the figure was doctored.
@CabviewHolland

The odomoters of these train seem to be resetable. I am considering not showing this info anymore. What do you think? Track 1 at Baarn is only used for some special occasions, not in normal service. The 1,2 kWh varies largely with different driving styles, like continuesly full throttle when late.

8:00 There are two SNGs coupled together, one with pantographs down and only a single white light showing, and one with pantograph up and the tail lights showing at the inner end. This is definitely unusual. I would suspect that one of them has a control system failure, and has been dragged into the siding by the other using mechanical but not electrical coupling.

Looks similar to the train driver drowsiness detector used on British Railways. There is a passive sensor between the rails about every two miles which generates a loud ping in the cab, the system then switches off and the driver must re-set it within a pre-set time or the emergency brakes are automatically applied and the train is brought to a stop.
