Céline Sciamma's Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a great place to start - Evan's wife has great taste in trailers, it seems. She's perhaps my favourite director out there right now, having also made Water Lilies, Tomboy, Girlhood, and particularly Petite Maman which was my favourite film of last year.

Wow thats wild after 17 years!! One of the plus sides of Social Media for sure reconnecting like that! Welcome Evan you will now have the thirst for Criterions after your first purchase and will need to keep on feeding it every sale now lol.

Evan, have you seen Orson Welles’s super low-budget Macbeth film from 1948? It’s not great, but I do think it’s pretty good. Curious to know your thoughts

I assume you’ve seen Roman Polanski’s Macbeth? It’s extremely violent.

All good choices! My first Criterion was also "Fisher King", but I didn't have much choice there. In Europe we have Criterions for few years now, and the library is limited and one shop was doing occasional weekend deals, where they cut the prices on two Criterion titles, so every now and then I could just pick up one Criterion blind. I think the choice was "Fisher King" or "Tootsie". I've seen "Tootsie" before, so I went with "Fisher King", because while I knew about it, being Terry Gilliam flick and who stars in it, I've never seen it. Wonderful movie. As for the "Macbeth", I've really enjoyed the Denzel one. I think it should be in the Criterion Collection just becoase of how amazingly it looked. I could lick the TV.

Love that you loved "Daisies"! And great that you watched "Women on the verge...", I'll look if you talked about it somewhere. Polanski's "Macbeth" is very good. Dench and McKellen.

Btw speaking of Shakespeare adaptations in the Criterion Collection. I cannot wait to get my hands on the newly announced February 2023 release of Romeo & Juliet (1968). My all time favorite Shakespeare adaptation. Also, I agree with your friend in never having seen an adaptation of Macbeth that I fully appreciate and love. Unfortunately, Throne of Blood personally didn't do it for me, but again that's just my own personal thoughts. I did really really love Kurosawa's Ran tho. God I wish that film was not an OOP title and had a Criterion 4K UHD release.

I saw that! I’m excited for that one too. I’m also so glad I waited on the Three Colors trilogy, so I can pick up the 4ks!

I’m a big fan of The Fisher King and Terry Gilliam. Robin Williams, Jeff Fisher and Mercedes Ruehl are great in this and Amanda Plummer was charming (Fun Fact: her father was Christopher Plummer). Also, Throne Of Blood was a great surprise and gift for Evan.
