If he wanted to prepare his son for the worst he should have done it while he was younger so he can better learn from it. There's nothing wrong with preparing your child for the worst that could happen. He said his son lied to him but he lied too saying he can't play no more. No, Troy (Denzel) tried to get to the big leagues, but wasn't able to because by the time he hit the big leagues, it wasn't recognised for a black guy to be a football player, and since they still were segregated, it made Troy bitter and jealous. That's why when he screwed his son over, he was scared and jealous that his son would make it to the NFL instead of him, since the league allowed black football players. However, he was also a drunk and an abusive father/husband who always recklessly challenged death to come and take him. It turns out that he had an affair with someone and got her pregnant, Troy initially denies it, but comes clean but kicks his son out after protecting his mother ("Strike 2"). Near the end of the film, his son is looking at enlisting in the military when Troy comes in intoxicated with a baseball bat intending to attack and possibly kill his own son, which leads Troy to kick his own son out and without the monthly rent that his son gives him, Troy finds that everything starts to go to shit. Eventually Troy has a heart attack whilst his son is deployed with the marines and dies, with his son saying he wouldn't go to the funeral, but relents when his mother tells him that it's better if you remember the good times he spent with Troy, rather than the bad times.

@@rickyrando3076 It doesn’t matter if you win or lose so long as you don’t give in or give up. And if necessary both parties bleed. It shouldn’t and doesn’t matter the age, respect isn’t something you’re born into, and obedience sure as h-l isn’t either. It is a two way street and *earned* both ways. Beating or berating into submission achieves neither. The only thing keeping parent and child feathered despite the circumstances is fear. If not of the parent then fear of striking out, living wild and out of society either in poverty or in the wilds. Unless said parent(s) clean up his or her act, it’s a better alternative. Not everyone has the will or faith to overcome or see past such fear. But if either is gone, then no leash or beating can tether their person any farther. And the only way to stay in each other’s lives is sincerity as well as patience; to grow understanding. Because it is only though that that both parties will live through life together. Your worth doesn’t start at your age. Parenthood is a *responsibility* , not an obligation. “A broken clock is right twice a day.” This is true of Troy as well. Just because he conveys a good message once or twice in this movie/play doesn’t make him a good dad… This scene is a great example. His son had a chance at a better life, but misery loves company.

Denzel plays these roles like no other it don’t matter what it is he can play the hero and make you love him or play the extremely evil villain and make you despise him… that’s a legendary actor

What a failure of a parent. I had parents like this when i was young, and it took them far too long time to realize what they were doing was wrong. I've forgiven them, but I'll never forget the things they took from me.

This wasn't even the worst thing. The dad is a jerk - we know this. It was the others like the mum who allowed him to get away with it. Nobody stood up for him. Even when he died and the boy wanted to stay away from his funeral, she defended him. And for the sake of plot armour, they all forgave each other.

Those who believe that being a father simply means to pay the bills and let your child exist are the very reason why our society is crumbling right around us.... we fail as a society when fathers and mothers don't teach their kids what they learned throughout life. That way, knowledge base increases and we as humans evolve

I remember my real dad never wanted me to play football because he "didn't want me to end up like him" (he was hospitalized in his last game back in the late 80s) Made me really upset. Till he unfortunately passed, and my stepfather was considered my new dad. I got to play at 12 yrs old. Still hated that type of moment at that young age, but it felt like I won the lottery when I got to play.

The whole point of the narrative is that the dad over did the tough parenting. At the end of the day, parenting is teaching the kid, but you should never ruin someones opportunity for success. That is when he stopped being a father and started to be a saboteur.
