It actually would have been just fine had it not been for the smarts of the Defendant. Read the Deputy before his Lawyer could and understood that the Deputy didn’t think the man was guilty and actually supported him. Then it really started to backfire because the Lawyer could build off that one question.

@@matthewwilliamson7293I would agree, but I estimate 30%~ of humans would abuse this right. No evidence convictions by pitchfork mobs never worked any better than what we have. In fact, men hung in trees for their skin color when men could get away with that style of "justice". All forms of government and non government would be perfect.....if humans weren't so easily corrupted. Child SA is not punished nearly harshly enough under the law. It's obviously deeply traumatic for the child. I am also teaching my kids to differentiate what they say in public, and what they truly think in private. For instance, we are all atheists but my kids go to a private religious school. Figure out the reasons. Second is correction. I will buy a house with some land. I may be planting a large tree one day, but I hope I don´t. Go figure what I am trying to say. I know what time it is. I know statistics. And I can not afford to be politically correct when it comes to my loved ones. All great, and some award winning roles there (TD, DBC). A far cry from How to Lose a Guy In 10 Days and Failure to Launch, but people always forget that he was incredible in this drama, way before he became the Rom-Com guy. I haven't seen this movie but just saying this: A lot of people say they'd kill someone if they tried harming their kids, but many people would kill if they even thought someone had harmed their kids. Even if they were mistaken or if its actually a different person. This is one of the reasons why we can't let our emotions decide on the law. When we are amped up people tend to act without thinking. I saw a news report a few years ago of a group of people who burned down the house of a known pedophile. The person in question wasn't home and they ended up accidentally killing the two kids they were supposedly protecting.

There's not a lot to object to. Unless legal practice was different back then, you are usually allowed to ask closed questions to a witness on cross examination. A victim impact statement carries a lot of weight for the court so when it is the defence or the prosecutor asking a victim what their opinion on the crime is that is usually going to be allowed. Usually a victim impact statement is in the favour of the prosecutor but it doesn't have to be, that's the whole point of it being the victim statement they are allowed to tell whatever story they want. Now the prosecutor might have wanted to have objected even though he would have been likely overruled, just to disrupt the flow of the dialogue from the witness which was no longer in his favour and to stop the jury absorbing it but I don't think there's really any proper objection you could make.

@@DantheSafetyMan you're not allowed to argue for jury nullification or solicit a legal conclusion. So it's definitely objectionable.

@@abebuckingham8198 well then that's an interesting fact about the difference between Australia and the u.s. In Australia you are generally allowed jury nullification arguments but some states have very strict limits on it. But that does not mean in any way our system is good, we only put people who report war crimes in prison not the war criminals themselves.

@@DantheSafetyMan I think "Do you think him shooting you was an accident?" could perhaps pass as a "speculation", maybe?

I have a 4 year old daughter. Only person to stop me doing what he did would be Jesus himself. I'm not sure if I would be able to repent. For accidentally getting the cop I would feel terrible, but the rapist? I don't know if I could forgive that. Even after slaying him, I don't know if I could. Jesus said hate in the heart is like murdering them. I don't know if that would bar me from God. That's a scary to think about. I pray nobody would have to go through that, but we are wicked and we live in a sinful world. I'm sorry people have these situations.

This is one of my faves. The part that gets me is when the defense lawyer describes what happened to the little girl and then says "Now imagine she's white", that was the most single, heart breaking line in the movie

Unfortunately, you can't ask someone if they should send him to jail. It would be objected immediately because it calls for a legal conclusion.
@dragonprincess8205

No it doesn't it is the victims opinion on whether the person who harmed them should be punished. They even have victim impact statements in most cases before sentencing because the court values the victims feeling on the punishment. Matthew just basically got the impact statement before the verdict

Also it is pretty common to ask if someone feels like someone acted in self defense and thats fine. So if that is OK asking if you think the person who harmed you should be punished if fine.

Except he didn't. No one has even accused him of harming kids. They also found him not guilty of harming adults. Don't believe everything you see on the internet.

The incident from the book this movie was inspired by happened in real life, except the author dishonestly changed the roles. The perps were blk and the little girl who got hurt was yt.
