Maaan, the ”What happened to my little girl?” at the end of the episode breaks my heart every timeeee 😭

Yeah, JK Simmons absolutely nails the feeling of a parent realising something terrible has happened to their child. It's not anger (that JK is known for doing incredibly well) but fear and helplessness

Remember way way back in Season 1 of ATLA where Zhao said he’d heard of Iroh’s journeys into the spirit world and how Iroh could see Roku’s dragon? This is the payoff, and Iroh unlocking immortality tracks.

It makes me kind of sad though, he will never see his son again. Unless there’s something I’m misunderstanding about the spirit world, but that’s what I get from it.

idk if they just didn't consider it before or what, but anytime Aang went into the spirit world, it was all gloomy and creepy? does that say something about Aang's true mental state? maybe his cheerful personality was a coverup. it's interesting to think about.

yeah very interesting and stupid people use that difference to hate on Korra without looking into the context and lore. The creators knew what they were doing from day 1 and everything in season 2 of Korra (lore-wise) was pre-planned.

That could be because of the war going on. Not about Aang's state, but worlds state. Lots of spirits was angry and unbalansed like Hei-Bai.

I think that just depends on where you are in the spirit world

I'm not sure it's as much that Wan Shi Tong doesn't know what's going on as it is that spirits just don't have the same kind of morality system as human beings do. Like Unalaq said in the beginning, all spirits have dark and light in them, and it is certainly true that Unalaq has a far deeper connection to spirits than he does human beings. It's a bit like Amon--yeah he's a villain, but he had a point deep down there somewhere. Unalaq is kinda right--human beings by and large do treat spirits poorly, and some (like Wan Shi Tong) have been wronged even by the Avatar. And, just like how Asami was the counter-point to Amon and Hiroshi in season 1, Iroh is a counter-point to Unalaq.

Meanwhile korra is calling them dark spirits lmao & tried to bend at them. You will think after seeing the first avatar, mastering the avatar state 6 months before book 2, she will be at least smarter

Wan Shi Tong is supposed to neutral and amoral but they made him selfish and conniving(for spirits sake but nah)
So glad you finally made it to this episode! Iroh is such a good soul... not surprising that he continues to give wisdom and hope even long after his life is done. Love your reactions, can't wait for more!

I don't think they can really go to the North Pole since that whole area is under Unalaq's control though since he's the Chieftain of the Northern Water Tribe. The bulk of his forces is probably there.
