"He Leadeth Me" was penned in 1862, during the American Civil War. Joseph Gilmore (1834-1918) said the words came to him after speaking about the need for soldiers to be led by their Commander. Joseph Gilmore put the poem away, and all but forgot about it. Mrs. Gilmore, without her husband's knowledge, sent the poem to a Boston Christian Weekly, where it was published. Upon seeing the poetry, Dr. William Bradbury sat down and wrote the tune for the words. The tune and lyrics were soon published in several hymnals of the day.
Bradbury's great tune has been borrowed for other sets of lyrics, including Sam Jones' work, "O Help Us, Lord, to Seek Thy Face," and Mrs. Rene Beattie's hymn, "This Question God Would Ask of Thee."
