Lawrence was a deacon in the middle of the 200s. He had many jobs. Among them were the care of the poor and the custody of the precious vessels used in the liturgy.
He lived during the broad sweeping persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire. When he was arrested for refusing to pay homage to the Roman gods, the officers demanded that he hand over the treasures of the Church. Lawrence acquiesced and presented to them the Church’s poor.
For this act, he was condemned to be roasted on a gridiron - a brutal death. And yet he kept his sense of humor to the end. After a few minutes on the grill, he told his executioner, “Turn me over. I’m done on this side.”
To this day, Lawrence is held up as a model of Christian joy. He’s a model for deacons. He’s a model for those who advocate for the poor. And he’s even the patron saint of cooks and chefs. He exemplifies the good life as we find it … in the Bible and the Church Fathers.
