I'm terrible with names, but there's an aspiring school shooter who did the same thing to his whole family. The worst part, in a catch 22 sort of way, is that he and every case of "altruistic killing" I see from the child's end always ends with them chickening out of whatever they were supposedly sparing everyone from and making the family murder even more pointless. Like obviously it's good that more death doesn't happen, but how about not killing anyone in the first place, eh? 😢

This is truly a horrific story in so many ways. The poor loving mother taken from her daughter, his sister who is now left with the lost of both her loving amazing mother and a brother. I have unfortunately have suffered mental health issues since my teens. People who have never suffered truly overwhelming deep depression/anxiety, psychosis, suicidal ideation etc, don’t understand how fast, deep and all-consuming that downward spiral is. Suicidal ideation, homicidal thoughts etc become very very overwhelming and feel "right and normal", you no longer think that these horrific thoughts are not okay. I have unfortunatly had an episode similar to this (sever post partum psychosis with suicide and homicide ideation), it was only once I was hospitilised and medicated (at great expense) for a few months; that the horror of my thoughts and potential actions dawned on me. 19 years later and I still feel great shame, sadness and horror at my thoughts during that time. Its truly a horrific place to be in. While that does not now absolve him from being punished (and he is rightly being punished) for his awful crime, it does help you understand how he got there. Mental health needs far more money, research, hospitals and AFFORDABLE help for sufferers, then perhaps there will be less horror stories like this and there will be fewer victims.

AND, in these countries, if they DO get a life sentence or a long one (20 years or more) they are out for various loopholes in half or less of the sentence. The worst one is 'good behavior'! Excuse me, if you are in a prison with a strict, set regimen, limited outside contact and no women around or a lot of time to make your own choices it is going to pretty damn easy to have good behavior which has nothing to do with living on the outside with the normal daily stressors and responsibilities! I used to work in a psychiatric out patient facility. Also had a family member with mental difficulties that committed a horrible crime. Best thing I was ever told by Dr’s who treated these patients was, no matter their mental condition at the time of the crime they still have to face the repercussion of their actions, I deeply feel that this is an important aspect, so with acknowledgement of the crime the individual will be in a better place to access the help they need, no excuses, but they must face the reality of their actions. Treatment is most likely different with inpatient facility vs outpatient facility. But I believe this to be true.

The jail is legally liable for the prisoner’s safety and maintaining their human rights. Anyone who is high risk will get accommodations to ensure they aren’t brutalized or killed under their care. I know there are people that disagree with this, but the primary point of jail is to rehabilitate, not torture, it’s prisoners. What he did is terrible, but leaving him open to being beat, raped, etc. is not going to undo it or make it better.

@@michelebedard2226 yes, of course. But if there is an obvious issue they can address, they will. For example, Danny Masterson was just convicted of rape. Rape convicts, like child abusers, are looked down upon by a lot of the prison community. They will likely sequester him in a jail that includes other similar offenders that are less likely to attack him for it. If a prisoner is trans, they will not house them with someone who has said they want to kill trans people, etc. It's a liability concern if it can be proven that there was a simple accommodation they could have made but didn't make it.

I have several diagnosed mental illnesses. I suspect we all have dark thoughts at times, but 99.99% of us do not act on those thoughts. Thankfully, there is a lot of help available these days for those of us with mental health issues. Mental illness should rarely be used as a legitimate defense for such horrific crimes (such as documented schizophrenia). It has become all too common for defense lawyers to use mental illness as a means to try to get their clients to be found not guilty or to receive a lighter sentence. It’s a slap in the face to the families of the victims. May Barbara rest in peace and I pray her daughter can find peace.

Had she apologised things would've been different, but she never did. The mother in this tragic story was so different. Everything a mother should be. As someone who has suffered from depression from a young age I find it frankly insulting that we still put emphasis on it in cases like these were it is almost used as an explanation or even excuse. I smoked weed for a while to cope, I drank to cope and not once has it ever crossed my mind to put any harm onto anyone that wasn't myself. His issue was not depression or he would have just killed himself and left it at that... he had a good acting career even if it's mostly stuff that I never heard off besides a couple of movies that I never cared to watch. Who knows what happened to this kid for him to end up doing something so horrendous in order to execute an also horrendous and nonsensical plan for no apparent reason. Weed and alcohol don't do that to people, depression doesn't either. Not all mental health issues are related to depression and not all mental slumps are depression either, he probably was struggling mentally because he knew he was mentally deranged to the point of being a dangerous evil monster and abusing weed and alcohol probably made him unable to suppress who he truly was deep down. Depression does not erase morals and values nor does it make you do those kind of things, this kid was capable of killing long before he had any struggles. When my stepmom was diagnosed with bladder cancer being the one who did all the heavy lifting in raising me and my siblings it got really bad for the mental but again not my self destructive tendencies nor my substance abuse nor my self deprecating and suicidal thoughts ever made me have any thoughts even remotely related to putting harm onto others, not even to all the guys that made me develop depression in the first place by relentlessly bullying me verbally and mostly physically day in and day out throughout the complete entirety of primary school (because luckily I moved out to go to high school somewhere else though much like this kid I also ended up dropping out later on in my academic career) and I remember them almost every day specially when I look in the mirror and see the scar on my left temple. And I'll say it again I spent about 7 years smoking weed every single day and most days between 4 and 6 grams which was around 30€ worth of it as regular consumption with a much higher consumption during "special occasions" and during weekends while drinking most days too and getting blackout drunk on most weekend nights, and I was around people that not only were more hardcore and also used other substances on top of those two but started in their early teens too and kept on going for much much longer than I did, my brother still being one of those people after over 26 years of doing so and no neither weed nor alcohol turns you into anything remotely similar to that, he did not develop psychosis because of it if anything it made it so he couldn't control his pre-existing mental health condition. Blaming weed and alcohol that take many many years of serious abuse to start taking a noticeable toll on the human brain is like blaming videogames for violence. Those are not the issues nor are they the reason even if they end up becoming catalysts for certain people. Most people I know have abused weed and alcohol at some point in their life, enough of them still do and I do not know anyone that does and has even a remotely violent tendency nor noticeable mental condition, much less depression. They do have an effect on the brain and they can certainly impact mental health for sure but people that have no idea about it are the ones that always speak out on how much of an impact they have or what they do to your brain... and weed's effect on the brain is for the majority of it a temporary effect that in essence makes your brain process slower making you sluggish and "sleepy" while also messing with your capacity to focus making you easily distracted and gets you deeply focused into whatever no matter how dumb a thing it may be. Alcohol also does not make you aggressive, it makes you be uninhibited which makes you undermine or completely forget about consequences and if you are a violent person in nature, whether openly or closeted, it will make you unable to control that part of your personality and it will be outed for everyone around you to see, and it also makes it easier for violent people to turn to violence when under the influence. Like you said he was keeping some of his darkest true self to himself most likely due to shame and if anything heavy consumption of drugs just made him unable to carry on doing so and he eventually embraced it.

@@tat1790 I felt the same way, there's been too many cases where that particular industry has destroyed the lives of young stars... some by heinous acts committed towards them or witnessed, others from being exposed to hard drugs from a young age and others because of all the pressure to perform plus the pressure from all the people that suddenly drown them with attention. Who knows but you are sadly very right and I agree it feels like there's something else, he never even tried to justify a motive as to why he wanted to murder Justin Tredeau as far as I know.
