Where was his scoring when his team needed it? Hell, they scored just 54 points in a NBA Finals game.

Stockton had 43 more assist than Magic. 89 he outplayed Garland what are you talking about he averaged 27/14. 90 he averaged 15/15. Terry Porter wasn’t even the reason they won in 91 because Drexler nearly averaged a triple double, Stockton had 18/14. 92 was the only time he was outplayed. 93 he outplayed Gary Payton. 94 Hakeem ate the entire Jazz team’s lunch. Saying that Kenny Smith was a big part of that is being disingenuous. 95 Stockton played great again 17/10. 96 outplayed by DPOY Gary Payton. 97 he played good and in both finals he lost to Jordan. Wow, great huh? 1998-9.7 points and 8.5 assists, led his team to just 54 points in a 42 point loss In those 12 games, averages less than 13 points and just over 8 assists Remember, after Jordan made the final shot on Russell, Utah STILL had a chance to win THAT game and Stockton AT HOME took a bullshit ONE legged jump shot that missed badly OVERRATED his entire career! Na. All you need is that one guy who has the skill set and durability and comes in at 19. That’s what lebron was to Kareem’s “unbeatable” scoring record. Kareem, like Stockton, played 4 years in college. Lebron and Kareem both played 20 seasons, but lebron got 3 of those in his youth because he was 19 when he entered the league instead of 22. If you compare the first 17 seasons, lebron scored 34k points vs Kareem’s 35k. If you compare the 17 seasons from ages 22 to 38, lebron only scored 32k vs Kareem’s 35k. The biggest challenge is that much of the game revolves around the primary ball handler being a scorer, which will limit assists, but you get the right durable, pass first PG in the league at 19, and stocktons records are possible. Even magic could’ve had more assists if he didn’t get HIV, because he came in at 20 and averaged more than Stockton. Granted you don’t know how well he maintains, but considering he put up 7 assists per game at 36 after being away for 5 years, it’s easy to think he could’ve done it.
@Aknight292

Yeah, Stock might not have thrown over the head no-looks, but the guy produced better, and far more often, than anyone who ever did it. The #s straight speak for themselves. Stock is THE reason that the assist and steals record are the most untouchable in NBA history - you will NEVER see those broken. Wilts 100 game is more touchable, by far.

Actually the only record as unbreakable is Wilts record for mpg in a season.
@mrjones422

@@daddyfuse50 There are several records that are untouchable. Wilts RPG and overall rebounds as well as Stocktons all time assist record. Stockton is more than 3700 assists above number two on that list and numbers two through 7 are less than 2000 apart. All of which had long careers. Lebron only has 2/3 of his assists for his career and he's at 20 years right now. For the steals that may be possible but the gap in what's been done is very impressive for Stockton. No one is close. You are 100% on that Wilt MPG for a season though. Nobody does that now. It's a feat to see a player play all 82 games now. Another reason why those career assist records will never be broken.

You don’t realize that the league (Stern), Jordan, Jordan’s Agent David Faulk, and Jordan’s advertisers didn’t want the more Isiah who was far more accomplished than Stockton to disrupt the league’s plan to present its product to the world at the Olympics, starring Michael Jordan. With Isiah and his basketball ball handling, scoring, and passing wizardry in all-star and charity games, which the Olympics were to the US Team, Zeke would’ve been just as much of an attraction that Jordan was and Magic was also upset at Zeke for rumors that Magic thought Zeke spread…Magic later apologized. The thing about Stockton is, he knew exactly how to bend defenders to create lanes for his scorers. He was a bit like Gretzky in that way, but Stockton is under appreciated in that because it’s difficult to appreciate some one making subtle positional decisions which open up lanes for his guys. That’s why so many of his assists were wide open lays, or wide open jumpers. They were wide open because he was forcing the defense to overplay someone else or cheat in a certain direction. He was always 2 steps ahead.

He was a Karl Malone merchant. Steph Curry could average 20 assists by entry passing it to Karl Malone for 15 years. Steph isn't known to be a great traditional playmaker but he is a very very good passer. What kills Stockton is his peak. We never saw his game without Malone. While his efficiency stats are high, he lacked volume to justify him as a #1 option, and his defense, while people say he was elite, I don't think he can sustain that if he's the #1 option.

The Stockton disrespect is wild. These young dudes focus on optics over production. They dismiss all the other variables like intangibles and basketball IQ. In their minds, Russell Westbrook is better than John Stockton not realizing that if Westbrook played in the 90s he would have been considered an undersized shooting guard and teams would have been reluctant to have him run the point. Many will point to his assist numbers but in reality, that's a reflection of his scoring gravity rather than him being a great passer or decision maker.
