In this video, we address a pair of hives with similar problems: bees building in a space where frames were omitted, in both cases into a feeder box. This is not a terribly uncommon event with top feeder boxes used to feed solid feeds over winter coming into spring. One hive built from the bottom up, and the other from the top down.
The sooner these events are addressed, the sooner you can re-direct the bees to more productive activities. Top feeder boxes should be removed before comb building begins, but there is little warning time between "still feeding" and "making new comb" in a fast hitting spring. However, regarding the missing frames: having ENOUGH equipment BEFORE you need it is essential to successful beekeeping. The labor to fix equipment shortages (and its impacts) far outstrips the labor to have it ready and available beforehand.
In the top-down built hive, we use a queen excluder to isolate the freestyle comb from the queen, ensuring all brood in that box will emerge in the next 24 days. After that 24 day period, the bees can be shaken off and the comb removed with as little bee carnage as possible.
In the bottom-up hive, we use a fume board to drive bees off of the freestyle comb. As this comb was broodless, we collected this comb for harvesting, then returned complete equipment to the hive.
