One of my all time favorite quotes is by Dr. Bruce Perry, and it says that the more healthy relationships a child has, the more likely he will be to heal from his trauma and thrive. Relationships are the agents of change, and the most powerful therapy is human love. That sounds so simple. Yet it's not easy, because if we want to help children heal and thrive and make progress, then we have to be kind to them.
We have to love them. We have to treat them like they're important. We have to treat treat them in ways that make them feel safe. We don't just provide for their physical needs. We provide for the psychological needs, their emotional needs, the spiritual needs on top of their physical needs, because the greatest therapy is human love. I love that quote because it sums up all of trauma informed care in just a couple of sentences.
But it also reminds me of First Corinthians 13 repulses that these three remain faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love, the supremacy of love and human relationships, and not just a feeling, but a decision to act in the best interest of another person. Is powerful, powerful therapy.
