Amen! I had one and struggled for years with guilt and grief. When I gave my life to God through Christ, I KNEW He'd cleansed me of it all and forgiven me completely 🤯 amazing!! Now I speak up against abortion. I was recently called a hypocrite because I have had an abortion AND kept 5 pregnancies. I was called judgemental and accused of bringing condemnation, but that is not true. People's own sin brings judgment and condemnation upon themselves. Not matter how much hate I may receive, I will continue to speak up like I wish someone had before I had my baby killed. Instead of asking "where was the church when I needed them?" I am being all that I needed for others.

I'm going to pray the rosary every Monday, as long as I can, the joyful misteries: - to ask for forgiveness that the evil of abortion took place all over the world - to be thankful that there are many people who fight for the babies to be born and support their mothers and that the law can protect life, now also in many states of America as well - and to ask for the change in human hearts, so that people perceive babies not as a burden, and for the end of sexual revolution.

Within the first 3 minutes, Matt mentioned the TV show 'F.R.I.E.N.D.S'... and it almost feels too stupid to admit to, but I think growing up with that show had a severely distorting effect on my developing worldview. Like, I _genuinely_ believed, for years and years, that casual sex with an unrestricted number of dating prospects was the default norm that _everybody_ was engaged in. It made me feel like when I became sexually active, all my choices were still 'more restrained' than average, even though I may have actually been less restrained than average. I grew up non-religious and I get how the following statement may sound 'extreme' to people with the same mindset I used to have... but I would now never let a kid watch the stuff I grew up watching. Not now that I know better. Kids can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality the way adults sometimes think they can; they lack the frame of reference. And we owe it to kids to feed their minds with what will be healthy for them, not what will lead them down an unhealthy path without them even realizing.

Agreed! I have watched every episode multiple times and totally regret it and will never watch again and will never allow any kids to watch it in my house. When my spouse and I first began our relationship we decided obedience to God regarding abstinence until marriage was essential and not just because God said it (although that IS ENOUGH!) but also because we wanted to confirm whether our relationship was or wasn’t leading to marriage (otherwise what’s the point?!), and our experience (and science too, yes) had shown us that sex clouds your judgement. When inquiring people tried to get “the dirty details” and discovered our commitment, they were shocked, even those we attend church with every Sunday. Very very disappointing and shocking to us as well as many different kinds of accusations were hurled our way despite everyone knowing we are Bible believers and conservative-it never occurred to most people that abstinence would indicate anything other than a problem (ie hidden abuse or closeted homosexuality or asexuality). Such a complete reversal from the previous generations.

I come from a very conservative family growing up in the Middle East where having sex or losing your virginity before marriage was totally unacceptable. Here, during your discussion you’re talking about responsibility and conscientiousness about having sex, but the truth is sex is a very much accepted, a very common and “normal” thing in this culture. People have sex for PURE pleasure without thinking about the consequences bc they think they can always have an abortion when the sex results in pregnancy with no sense of guilt. The moral standards are very flawed in this country and need to be changed or at least modified not by the government (they are the ones who have created this culture) but by the Church... So, banning abortion is like cleaning a small area of a vast wasteland full of litter. I know God has His own plans for the clean up… with the Holy Spirit or with real fire. In the meanwhile the militant church will have to fight against all evil.

One thing I am surprised I do not hear more about from us Christians esp. Catholics, is that Christ became a fetus, an embryo, a zygote, a blastula, Christ, God became these and gave them dignity in that, He did so by His Baptism in the Jordan and for marriage at the Wedding Feast at Cana. This is in a different way from those but, He was there and took on these vulnerable stages as we all have. The Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary, really all five, but espescially these three are a school for how to answer the sexual revolution.

We are completely opposite on every issue, yet she somehow clings to being Catholic, while adhering to pretty much zero teachings. Prayers to you and I ask for the same if you can. Stay strong and remember that we are given an extra guardian angel when we are married in the church. Try not to focus so much on praying for your wife’s conversion; pray for your marriage itself. My pastor advised that, and it’s helped me feel less resentment, cuz I kept thinking, “I pray for her true conversion every day and nothing happens!” It made me just more and more angry and bitter.

Good advice from @AdamCleveBrowns and something I would add as a Husband (14yrs)/Father (7yrs) also in similar circumstances is to up your spiritual warfare game. You as the husband/father have a certain spiritual dominion over your wife/children. It’s not something you advertise and lord over them; rather since your vocation is to serve your family, exercise it in frequenting the Sacraments, deliverance prayer (See Fr Chad Ripperger and his books), mortifications (fasting, abstinence, reparation), and increased use of sacramentals around the home (blessed salt, holy water, Gregorian chant in the background) and maybe you can even get to the point of a family rosary. You are not in a fight with your wife; you’re in a fight with the world, the flesh, and the devil; you are fighting FOR your wife and kids. Seek consecration to St Joseph, to Mary, to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and build your spiritual army. God bless you guys and stay on the path.

Dr.Crete`s parts work reminds me alot of the work of Dr.John Vervake, Dr.Jordan Peterson, Symbolist Jonathan Pageau and Bishop Robert Barron on meaning espescially Dr.Vervake and Mr.Pageau when they speak. Dr.Peterson is a student of Jungian psychology who I think most people here may know of. Bishop Barron is of course a bishop and not a researcher so his work is somewhat less related but it fits nicely to give a good Catholic grounding for it. A deeper Catholic frame though can be seen in the writings of St.Hildegard of Bingen a Doctor of the Church.

I think the following is a helpful explanation of the “self” for any Catholic who may struggle with this IFS terminology. Dr. Gerrydescribes the self as the bridge between one’s parts and God, and says he does not agree with Dick Schwartz’s latest theory about the self being the source of healing itself. If you listen to some of his podcasts where he touches on this, Dr. Gerry talks about how the inmost self and our parts are who God made us to be before our parts took on the burdens of sin/trauma. Therefore, only when we are acting from the self, which doesn’t see through the lens of sin, can we hear God as He truly is, and not as a part interprets. This holds a lot of parallels to St. Theresa’s interior castle. When we bring our parts into communion with the self through compassionate and curious questioning and listening, interior integration is achieved and we more wholly reflect the flawless love of Christ. Of course, the process should be done according to a Catholic anthropology and with the invocation of the Holy Spirt. Check out Souls and Hearts for more.

It seems to me that what is being discussed when they say "parts of the self" seem to just be the parts of the soul together with the habits that form our second nature. We are one being but there are many parts of our being and even many parts in the soul. The interactions of these parts both with one another and with the world around us form habits in us from childhood that become so ingrained within us that they can appear to be separate "sub persons or personalities". But they would not be persons as such only aspects of our personality. Aristotle talks of several parts such as authoritative reason and the apetative powers. The activities of each can seem to us almost to be separate personalities but I would argue that that is too strong a position. I do not experience them as separated from a central person, namely , me, but as habits formed in the parts of my nature that I have not integrated into my "deepest self" or to put it another way they are not yet subjects of highest reason and thus not yet unified as one within me. Thus they take on the appearance of "sub personalities" but they aren't other selves but rather parts of our nature and habits that we need to bring under the sway of reason so that we can be a complete person.

I had some thoughts mostly typed up, that my phone just deleted... grrr First, I just want to say that I am also a non-Catholic, and generally opposed to divorce. I am also an alcoholic (2 years sober; yay!) So I feel for your husband and know well his pain. Your first responsibility is to protect your kids; you should probably look into a legal separation, asap. From a safe distance, you can decide/talk with your pastor or other counselor about divorce. I think most communions would consider divorce permissible (even if not ideal) in cases of the 4 A's: addiction, abandonment, abuse or adultery. Hope that's helpful, and I will pray for you.

The story of the leukimic patient made me want to share this; I've talked to my father about abortion and even though he began by presenting real argumemts for allowimg it, little by little he decided to just tell me that he simply believes that allowing it within the constraints that are in place in Italy (first trimester, lengthy consultation with a doctor, free foster care) is better than forbidding it because when he was very young he helped this wealthy old dusty doctor move houses, and he had to throw out "multiple huge sacks filled with used up meat grinders"... I don't really know where to go now, it's obviously the emotionally charged experience that makes him convinced that restricted abortion is better than no abortion, but so what?

24:00 thank you so much for sharing and applying that story. Too often we fall into the trap of using the world's ways to fight for every "cause". The world chooses the cause, context, and battleground. Obviously there is a place for utilising democratic tools, for example, but you have highlighted the way of God's Kingdom - seeing the wounds and helping them heal. So let's say Nancy Pelosi had an abortion and it defines her defensiveness, how might that change our approach?

« What does it mean to have multiplicity of self? » Perhaps, from a christic perspective, it means that all human beings have an inner most self naturally responsive to be born again in and from the universal Christ. Perhaps it means that all human beings, to paraphrase Saint Augustin, have a inner most self whose very nature is to have both a natural hunger for God and some form of intellectual mastery of God’s word. Abortion is murder so how are we supposed to go on and treat people who have committed murder in that way? Surely we should want them to go through the criminal justice system? But, we seem to treat people who have murdered through abortion different to those who have murdered someone who has been born. This is something I'm having a lot of difficulty with.

Exactly. You will never get a satisfactory answer to this, because the logic is incoherent. Murder is already illegal, but that doesn't mean that everyone who kills is brought to justice. They can get away with it, or defend themself in court. Why shouldn't it be the same for abortion? Instead, the Supreme Court has decided to ban the procedure entirely, meaning that it's illegal for abortion clinics to operate. It's similar to the idea of banning the AR-15, but Catholics believe that crosses the line and infringes on our liberties. Specifically, our liberty to kill when necessary.

@@nacpictures no, your logic is completely incoherent. You must make it so the state recognizes what is true (abortion is murder) and acts accordingly (jail the murderers). You can go to an illegal abortion clinic and when you get caught, defend yourself if you want. That's how the world went before the 70s. Your analogy with guns isn't well supported because owning guns and allowing the distribution of guns is not inherently evil, unlike murder. I personally think it's irresponsible for a country to entrust its citizens with guns as much as the US do, but it's a disputable topic. Nobody is disputing the morality of murder and you can prove that abortion is murder.

Mmmmm thé problem with parts is the bible says that the battle is between spiritual forces. To say we are all compassionate at our core, when the bible says that only God is good, that God I’d love and truth, I think really shows this parts way of thinking of things is not something compatible and actually obscured the spiritual battle between evil and good

It seems to me that many people conflate perception or perspective with truth. That's what 'my truth' and 'your truth' emulate. It's like you have to walk with them from their opinion perception to objective reality. It's like letting them see the conflict in their mind as an observer with you. A clumsy metaphor to be sure. And to be fair we all have this problem with varying degree in varying subjects. It's a human problem. Perhaps start the conversation with how do they think Nazis thought of others. Instead of accusing them of thinking like nazis. Let them figure out that the reasoning is the same between nazis killing non Aryans and parents killing fetuses. Obviously not really feasible in one conversation. Sadly.

I found most of the time wanting to give this doctor the benefit of the doubt, although his method if applied on mass would necessarily allow for abortion and all of these evils to continue while people work it out. But what really struck me as nefarious is around the 30 minute mark when he talks about not inviting Christ into your deepest wounds, but letting your “inner most self“ become Christ for you. That is absolute total secular psychobabble heretical bullshit. There is nothing within us that can become Christ for us - only our Savior can and is that thing.

32:33 "They need a reconciliation with Christ" 33:00 - 37:00 Explanation of the therapy of inmost self (secular true self), related to what St. Paul the Evangelist define as "the faculty by which we connect with God". 37:55 - 38:13 "It's not like inviting Christ to come into the 'moment' like some therapist do exactly, but it's allowing Christ and the Holy Spirit to support the inmost self, to inspire and encourage... and allow the inmost self to be 'Christ within us' and be able to heal" When I re-watch in context, there is a statement of "not inviting Christ" to the "moment" you are living within the therapy, while inviting Him to your "inmost self" as a connection to God. Dr. Crete never denies inviting Christ, but highlights the invitation to the "inmost self", rather than to a "therapy moment". I take this to mean that, in order to heal, it is necessary to connect with God (inmost self) to allow Him to support, inspire, and encourage healing. That fits entirely with the first quote I post here, that sacraments are key for a person that takes Catholic faith seriously. The statement "Christ within us" aludes to the very Catholic idea that we are Christified through the sacraments, particularly the Eucharist: "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him." (John 6:56).

Very well put Paula. Its the transformation BY CHRIST just as holiness is allowing Christ to transform us. I think its very important not to take one sentence out of context but listen to all that he is saying. Its always dishonest to do that to someone's ideas and try and claim all their thoughts can be captured in one comment. He makes it very clear where the line is for anything that becomes unChristian/Catholic and is not acceptable. Instead its the process of allowing our transformation in Christ, to allow healing and purification to happen. It sounded much more like he was using an allegory than we LITERALLY are Jesus instead of Jesus. No. Our innermost self instead is moulded into what Christ wants us to be in love.

He describes the self as the bridge between one’s parts and God, and says he does not agree with Dick Schwartz’s latest theory about the self being the source of healing itself. This holds a lot of parallels to the St.

I would push against idea that when it works it´s true - in my experience buddhism worked and brought lot of healing - there are many faith healers and shamans who bring objectively visible healing and are not Christians... There is true healing which always has goal in salvation of soul and there is fake healing which heals your body and psychology but brings you away from God ans salvation relying more and more on different self work, therapy, faith healing... And we are back at salvation through work. + it´s work which doesn´t lead to salvation and distract from it. I would not say these terapeutal techniques are Christian - they are not. Christ is Christian - he is the only way. Period. Yet I woudln´t say everything have to be Christian to be good. My dentist isn´t Christian yet I still go see him to fix my teeth and he does it well. Dentistry doesn´t revolve around Jesus. I still go to see doctor... Therapy is crucial in trauma healing - just crucial. But we don´t have to dance around it try to make it look Christian when it is not. Question is: is this helpful to me as well as leads me closer to God or is it helpful to me but takes me more into myself for myself´s sake and away from God. It differs therapist to therapist. So if the therapist is a good Christian and doesn´t hide and doesn´t embrace new age which is creeping into therapy so much then he will not lead you away from God- but there needs to be CLEAR differentiation: this is not substitution to salvation. This is my going to see my dentist. Because my teeth/trauma and whatnot need some fixing and I need professional help with it. It brings no salvation. It is still beneficial. If it leads you away from Christ just quit and find different therapist. Even within the same terapeutical school there will be therapists who are more new agers and those who are not. BUT THESE TECHNIQUES ARE NOT CHRISTIAN. And they don´t have to be. You don´t go there for salvation. The problem starts when you start going there for salvation. And it´s great christians are becoming therapist trained in these techniques because then you don´t have to bend yourself over trying to persuade new ager therapist to stop trying to make his therapeutical work your salvation. So summary: to me what is important - is this technique in contradiction with Christ - does it involve my commiting sin or being involved in idolatery? No? Is having different parts of personality against Christian teaching? We are broken through sin. Ours and others - sin of others done to us is trauma. Sin we are committing is creating these dead places within ourselves where God´s mercy cannot enter. Same with sin of another human done to us... If we call it dead place in soul where sin left wound and we burried it and don´t allow God´s mercy reach us there and heal the wound of sin because it´s too painful to us or sometimes even dangerous to integrity of mind - or if we call it exiled child or however we want to call it - it is not against Christian teaching. We are broken by sin. Is my therapist someone I can trust that won´t lead me away from Christ in the world of self work? Is he helping and encourageing me to allow these places come to light so that God´s mercy can touch and heal them? Does he clearly differentiate this is healing process and has nothing to do with salvation and cannot in any way substitute it? All good? Then thank you and see you again doc.

What I have picked up on in talking with those who are protesting is a genuine fear of losing way more than the freedom to have an abortion as in the bad old days when women were pregnant every couple of years. How many people would/could abstain from sex. What we need is to be allowed to use birth control without guilt.. . If only to prevent the population from exceeding sustainability.. Frankly I'm afraid we have already gone beyond sustainability.

Respectfully, contraception is a mortal sin. There ought to be guilt and shame in the act of using it, because it is a shameful act of rebellion against God and nature as he established it. You don't have to accept it personally, but it IS the teaching of the Catholic Church.

Using birth control is saying to God “I don’t trust you. I don’t believe you are good. I know better. The world has no need for you. I am the author of my life. Go away.” Total confidence in, belief in, dependence on, and trust in God is the how we are called to live. Giving control of your life to Jesus is scary and the father of lies will fill your head with all sorts of reasons not to…but it’s the Way. If you want license to do what you want without guilt…I am sorry to tell you but that is the church of Satan…pretty sure that is their only commandment. What we need is to realize that our lives here on earth are fleeting, but our eternity depends upon how well we can empty ourselves of our sinful attachments and live a virtuous life.

Everything that is in the world is in me and everything that is in me is in the world that is in my flesh, you speak of the parts of oneself because there are many spiritual positions and desires within the self, the spirit of Pride, the spirit of anger, spirit of fear, the spirit of jealousy, envy, arrogance, all things pertaining to the flesh, every kind of sexual lust and desire, every kind of covetous Desire, for all things that is in the world is in me, but Christ has overcome the flesh, he has overcome the world and everything in it, it is by the power of the Holy Spirit that overcomes all these things, to purify my heart as the heart of the Christ is pure, to be transformed into Purity the image of the Christ, if you want to overcome the things of guilt and shame and all things that are within you that you desire not, then it is only by the power of the Christ who can overcome and remove all these things pertaining to the flesh and the sinful nature, clean the inside of the cup and the outside will be clean also, you can go to therapy all the days of your life but unless the Christ removes these things from your heart they will always remain, I throught the Christ the Christ alone, has cleanse me from many things and continues to do so until I am made perfect as the Christ is perfect, perfect man, son of god, son of light, love immaculate, Love Divine,

This comment makes no sense. The inquisition was never interested in witchcraft and the inquisition was specifically for questioning proclaimed Christians to determine if they are actually Christian. It wasn't even popular at the time outside of the inquisition and it was on the margin of society and wasn't a very popular practice. There was also a prevalent skepticism of witches in the early medieval period and King St. Alfred the Great rejected the suggestion to investigate the activity of witches with the short and simple response that there aren’t any. Witch hunting became a practice after the so called Enlightenment in many countries and when it was done by Christians, it was Protestants, particularly in Germany starting from the 16th century. Also, there was even one case where a local inquisitor heard in the countryside that seven women had been accused of witchcraft and the secular authority was going to put them to death. The local inquisitor agreed with the secular authority and when word got back to the regional inquisitor, he immediately got to the area, removed the local inquisitor from his position due to his inappropriate actions of interaction with the secular authority on this issue and his severe lack of judgement and poor decision and dismissed the charges against the women. Five of the women had already been executed by the secular authority but the other two were then released. So not only did the Church not partake in the killing or punishment of alleged witches but they intervened to stop it. As for the grand inquisitors, such as Torquemada, reformed the entire system and introduced prison reforms, improving the conditions, and many of the practices that we take for granted in today's legal systems for determining guilt or innocence come from the systems of Torquemada based on inquisition manuals by inquisitors like Bernard Gui and Nicholas Eymerich; Myths about the inquisition come from pop culture and the history is extremely clear.
