Reassurance seeking is harmful for a health anxiety sufferer because it provides only temporary relief while reinforcing and perpetuating the anxiety in the long term. Each time you seek reassurance, it strengthens the belief that your fears are justified, leading to a cycle of increasing anxiety and dependence on external validation. This behavior also intensifies your focus on perceived symptoms, further fueling their anxiety and preventing them from developing healthier coping strategies. Ultimately, it traps you in a vicious cycle that worsens your condition rather than alleviating it.
I know it’s tough. I’ve been there. I was the queen of reassurance seeking! It’s all I did at one point but I knew that it was a habit that I HAD to break if I was going to recover.
In my upcoming health anxiety mastermind course, I’m going to address the critical issue of reassurance seeking and why it’s so detrimental to our health anxiety recovery. We’ll explore how this behavior, while offering brief comfort, actually fuels a vicious cycle that deepens anxiety over time. I’ll discuss how it reinforces the belief that there’s something seriously wrong, making it harder to break free from the constant worry. Together, we’ll unpack the reasons why this cycle persists, and I’ll provide strategies to help you guys shift away from seeking external validation, so you can all build more effective, long-term coping mechanisms. This will be a key focus in helping everyone move toward a healthier mindset and greater resilience against health anxiety. ✅
